Am searching for a Walter Nutter b. 1875 Parents are Richard & Sarah Ann. In 1891 he was 16 and a cotton weaver living with parents. Can't trace in 1901. Help?

[copied from a duplicate topic put up by Annie.  No need for a separate topic for each enquiry Annie.  Just add them to this one.  Saves space on the site.

Hi Gloria

Tell me what you think about his Nutter! LOL

Richard & Margaret (Riley?) lived in Hibson Houses in 1941, They seem to match the name pattern down the line ie Richard 1st born son, Margaret 1st born daughter etc. I think that they might be James Nutter b. 1816 parents?

Hi Annie, I have looked for the 1841 you mention with Richard and Margaret but cannot see them. I have seen lots of Nutters all with the same names, and same names for children, so it is not going to be easy.

Is this James, Martha and family in 1851. Living in the Weslyan Chapel Little Marsden. James is a warp dresser.

Name Age
Ann Nutter 13
Barbara Nutter 9
James Nutter 36
Luke Nutter 2 Mo
Mark Nutter 5
Martha Nutter 32
Mary Nutter 14
Richard Nutter 11
Thomas Nutter 7
William Nutter 3

Hi Gloria

Yes, it's the same family & I have only just found a ref. to them in 1841 living in Hibson Houses (not 1941 - silly me!) on Originsnetwork.com. The site seems to have a pretty comprehensive 1841 census. Never found them on Ancestry.com

It was in this same census that I found Richard & Margaret living in Hibson Houses. Not quite sure where that was but I guess it was Hibson Road area, St. Paul's.

I am off to the library today to see what I can find from Parish Registers. Wish me  luck!

Thanks for your help.

Annie

I have never used that website, always use ancestry, thought they had them all but obviously not. What do you get on it and how much is it.

Enjoy your trip to the library, which one do you use? I have been to Burnley a few times and Nelson once. It is easier for me to go to the records office in Preston.

Just had a quick look at the site Gloria. At first glance they have a good collection. They also have Irish. Subscriptions start from £7.50 for 72 hours access to all that they have. Or you can break it down and access British only or Irish only for slightly less. Annual total access is £34.50. I've only just renewed with ancestry but I think I will give this site some serious thought.

This is their British origins collection......

My Ancestry sub doesn't run out until April, so I think I will stay as I am until then. I am quite comfortable with it, but didn't realise there were bits missing---all good fun.

Gloria - if there's anything you want me to look up in Origins - just ask. Back at work on Thursday but I 'm usually busy with family tree on here at weekends, but I will reply asap.

I've transcribed what I got from Colne library but I omitted a couple of facts  in my efforts to get it all down in the time I had! There were quite a few people researching their family trees and all wanting the same books!

I got:- Local Nutters from Parochial Chapelry of Colne Baptisms 1734-1774, & 1790-1812.

Male Nutters from Colne Parish Marriages 1754-1812 (I had most from IGI but they don't give occupations) but then neither did the earlier parish entries!

I hope to return tomorrow to clear up a few details. Once I have finished I will put them up on the site for others to look at if they want , but they need some more work yet.

If you're interested I will send you what I have at the mo?

Annie

Hello Annie!   I went digging through my Barrowford Nutters to see what I could find for you as your names looked familiar.   Sadly...they must have gone into the 'discard pile' as I was researching, as they are not the same as mine.  However, the rummage through the box of papers was profitable, as I found a stack of handwritten histories and family trees that I had copied and packed the last time I was camping at Nelson library.   I had forgotten about them until I stumbled upon them tonight!    They appear to be handwritten documents from a Mrs Briggs and a Doreen Crowther, and they both have bits of my Barrowford Nutter line referenced.

Does anyone have any other material (like a typed transcription perhaps?) of these documents or know of these two historians?   I can scan and post if anyone is interested, but my copies are rather hard to read.   I'm particularly interested as there are bits with my line going back to Wm Nutter (b 1775ish, married Eliz/Betty Manley, parents to John b 24-3-1799), and then farther back references to the bewitching Alice...now that would be quite a discovery!!!   Need to spend some time transcribing these if it hasn't been done already.

Then the question arises....can  you take someone else's research as 100% accurate?

Cheers!

Deb...

Mary Briggs and Doreen Crowther are revered names as far as I'm concerned Debs.  Mary did some very good work including transcribing 'A Lancashire Weaver's Journal' in the record society of Lancs and Ches series.  She did a lot of short articles and lectures and is very sound.  Doreen Crowther was the best researcher I have ever met.  Her stuff is in Colne Library I think, give Christine a ring at the library and she'll fill you in.  She transcribed acres of deeds and wills and court rolls in her incredibly neat and legible writing.  A great loss.  I'm sure she'll have had a look at the Nutters at some time or other.Again, she is totally reliable.  We need more Doreens..........  Give Christine Bradley a shout at Christine Bradley Colne

Right on Stanley.

By coincidence Sylvia was at Pendle Heritage Centre yesterday afternoon talking to Fay when a woman brought in a large box full of documents. "We didn't want to throw these away so I have brought them here for safekeeping" - they were some of Doreen Crowther's original documents from her local research. The box has now disappeared into the bowels of the Malt Kiln! However, Fay has said that I can peruse the docs so all is not lost.

Deb, please scan and post whatever you can. The subject of the Dam Head Nutters and their descendants requires as much interaction between record holders as possible to begin to make sense of it.
