Re: OLD AGE AND FREEDOM

http://www.oneguyfrombarlick.co.uk/gallery/image.php?album_id=346&image_id=367 I wasn't sure where to post this pic but the penknife is certainly in old age! We found it in the garden where my father has been living the last 12 years but he can't remember if it is his or not. It's small and the...

Re: WE ARE WHAT WE EAT

What little waste fat there was in the old days would have gone for porcine processing. i.e. fed to the pig at the bottom of the garden! Whippy, that argument is like "Uncle Joe smoked and lived to 103 so smoking can't be bad for us". The majority of folk died a lot earlier than your grand...

Re: The Western Front Association

With 6000 members, two magazines and 50 branches nationwide it's very successful - and will become even more so as we move into the the centenary in 2014-18. When I was talking to Martin after his presentation I mentioned how a bloke called Stanley had told me that the British were buying shells off...

"... residents will see saving the planet as a great way to save money . " Here we go again - when will they get it through their heads that the planet doesn't need `saving', it doesn't care what the global temperature is, it would be quite happy to be boiling hot like Venus or cold like N...

The Western Front Association

Our Village Hall in Somerset hosted a one-day exhibition on hobbies and interests today and among the topics was a presentation by the Deputy Chairman, Martin Hornby, of the Western Front Association whose objective is to further studies into the Great War (World War 1). Martin is one of our former ...

An example of how bad things can get is shown by news I've received from a New Zealand friend, a food scientist who makes visits to China. This is what he tells me... "The Chinese government has concerns over recycled cooking oil, or `gutter oil', which is refined from kitchen waste, gutters, d...

A lovely aeroplane, related to the Vickers Victoria:

Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING

Output of CO2 by countries like China is growing fast but the developed world has still dominated industrial production and release of CO2 until now. The increase among some developing countries was still outweighed by the fall in the developed countries, although this is about to change as China, I...

Catty, save up your 25p payments and put them towards buying a share in Stanley Gibbons. It's one of the best performing companies on the FTSE 100 at present as people try to find somewhere to invest their cash for a decent return. Stanley Gibbons is doing well two ways - sales of rare stamps and sa...

Which is what you would expect, as a result of the recession depressing industrial activity and thus reducing the amount of CO2 entering the atmosphere.

Travis, ask at a local art supplies shop, they may be able to tell you of someone who can do it for you. Or contact the art department of a local college and ask them.

Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING

I agree, but the new science data points to the fact that CO2 is actually being lost from the atmosphere at a greater rate than was first thought. The cycle I pointed at was burning timber rather than fossil fuels, so the other part of your arguement is less substantive too. Plus since the UK impor...

"For ease the Inland Revenue haven't done it on a sliding scale but on a step system". How the Revenue (HMRC) can say it's easier beats me. That's what I meant in my post above, Eileen. It should be dead easy, especially for HMRC, to operate a sliding scale with no steps. Computers make it...

Ah, Eileen now you've done it - bringing `collectables' into the definition. Probably many OG members will know from the old site that I'm an avid collector and tend to get carried away with collecting all sorts of items. And whatever I start collecting I have to delve into in great depth - it's obl...

My dad's moving to a smaller house and we are trying to gently get him to accept that it will be impossible to fit all his furniture in there. It's a 2-bed semi and so not all that small but he has multiples of everything - 3 wardrobes, 4 chests of drawers, 3 dining tables, 2 beds (one double, one s...

This evening Mrs Tiz shouted to me "There's been a murder in the back yard"! Now, this is a quiet village and we don't usually get Midsomer Murders and the like so I doffed my Marigolds (washing up) and went to look. No blood and gore, no body - just a covering of feathers all across the f...

Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING

Whether the system is carbon neutral is not the important point as far as global warming/climate change is concerned. It's the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere which determines the `greenhouse effect' and thus the degree of warming. You can have a `neutral' (balanced) cycle at a low atmosph...

Stanley, if you are caught out any time needing a new fire brick the shops that sell stoves can cut you a new one out of a block of vermiculite. Handle it carefully when you first get it because its friable but it toughens on the first heating. Increasing thermal resistance of the shell of the house...
