Ian is correct; the recorder is for measuring the flow of water going into the canal from the Winterburn reservoir. A float is connected to the machine which moves a stylus over a recording drum. This has been superseded by a laser detection device (which is a boring grey box).

The meter house is used as a brew cabin by staff and volunteers - bloom team members used it in a recent action day we held at the locks.

Judging from the building I'd say it was it was not in Britain, the brickwork doesn't look right, the building style is different. It's just too...tidy and neat!

Joint effort China as you know full well. Hero of Alexandria is one of the first to get motion out of steam but I am sure there will be a rival claim from someone in China!
This particular one is an exact replica of the original Newcomen Atmospheric Engine commissioned by the Earl of Dudley. It is at the Black Country Museum. Still steamed occasionally and well worth seeing in action.

I thought I'd save this mystery object for when Stanley returned. I have to admit I'm not sure myself what it is but it lives in the Bakelite Museum.

Other than Stanley, everyone seems to have gone very quiet - I hope I haven't offended the sensitivities of OG members with this pic. But it sits there innocently on one of the shelves in the Museum (out of reach, of course!). I'll give you a bit more information...her left nipple has ON and OFF written on it and the right one has numbers, I think from 1 to 9.

Not at all Tiz, I have tried Googling for anything similar, tried all ways of describing her and got some very bizarre returns from over in doll land, (the Japanese have some funny fetishes). Can't find another like her, she's pretty weird though.

Just read the second line of your reply, is she a radio?

That gave me a laugh, Ian, when I thought about what you'd get when you tried googling keywords for this mystery object! I wondered about the possibility of radio too - there is what might be a removable base for batteries although there could be a mains cable hidden at the back somewhere. But if it were a radio you'd need a third nipple for tuning it!

I wonder if her head rotates for tuning, it would only need to pan from side to side? Alternatively one nipple could be a combination on/off and volume and the other with the numbers could be the tuning.

Well done, Wendy! Your doll might be a later model. The notes state `modern plastics, not Bakelite'. I doubt that the Bakelite Museum man would allow anything made of `modern plastics' (ugh) in his Museum. But otherwise it looks much the same. You can imagine millions of them being made in Hong Kong. Thanks for solving that one.

I don't know why but it reminds me of the time Doc was very puzzled because one of the topics on the old site was getting an enormous number of page views, in itself a mystery. We decided in the end it was because in a description I had written were the words "and she caught me on my hands and knees wearing my Marigolds" Another similar mystery was the fact that if I sent a mail with the address line 'Apron Hooks' it never got through. It's a strange world out there!
