SHED MATTERS. MARINE ENGINES.

Post by Stanley »

No progress to report on the engines but I am over the cold now so we will get round to finishing them off. Just making sure we have the topic up and running again. Remember that anyone can join in!

It worked. I copied the image location from the gallery and then clicked on img above and inserted the link in the script. It worked. If anyone finds an easier way, let me know.....

I only had the small image. I went back and copied the image location of the larger pic and it worked.

Now I don't want to get you too excited but I have warmed the shed and will go in for a clean up and to have a look at the rabbit. One job I want to do is make a small fire-iron for the new stove. The bearings will creep up on me!

Feeling guilty, I have been unable to get my mojo going for shed work. Bear with me, I'm improving every day and it will come!

High time we got cracking in the shed again. As this is a new topic on a new site I thought we'd better start with a bit of orientation for new readers. This topic is a continuation of the same subject on the old site. All the action takes place in Stanley's Shed. For a year now I have been making two marine engines and we are close to a conclusion. Here's a general view of the shed:

As this is the first time I have done multiple images I'll keep the windows separate until I get used to the process.

We have two engines at the same stage of build, everything is finished except for the pipework and motion. Here's one of the engines mounted on Johnny Pickles' big lathe so it can br driven to bed the crankshaft bearings in. The next stage is to make the big ends and con-rods, fit them in situ and run the bearings and the bores in by driving with the lathe. Today I shall be reminding myself of measurements and design and starting the process of making the big end bearings. I've not been near it since I started with the Xmas cold on December 22nd and need to get my brain back in gear.

Not a lot done yesterday, I was in the shed but other matters crept up on me so this morning I refused to be diverted!

Not a great deal to show for the work but the main thing is I've got my head into Shed mode again. I must be getting better. Five blanks reduced to 3/8" thick. We are moving again and I must be recovering from the Xmas Cold!

I relented and went in the shed...

Decided it would be quicker in the long run to saw the remaining blanks to near finished size. Bleeding obvious tip, use the square to set the vice parallel with the saw.

Close of play, not a lot to show, partly because I haven't got anywhere near up to speed yet but also because I had a small problem. The auto feed on the HM table jammed and it took me a while to find the problem. It was only a small thing, the register dial had slipped on its mount and was preventing the manual handle slipping in and out of gear. OK now.
Was going in the shed this morning but due to the cold weather and adjustments to the way the house is heated the shed has suffered. It was far too cold to be in there this morning so I've kicked it into touch for the day.

Thanks for that Bodge. Conditions in shed still too cold. I have my Mojo back but as yet it isn't strong enough to persuade me to work in cold weather gear!

Morning Robert. We all did but we are getting used to it now. Went in shed yesterday but it was too cold for me knee so I have withdrawn for a while. Funny thing is that the weather has warmed a bit and the CH isn't kicking in so no heat going in there! It will come....

The good news is that the Mojo is running strong again and I shall be in the shed this morning. Don't expect a full service for a day or two, I have toi get my head in gear and back up to speed. Good clean up first and a small job on a poker?

I thought you all deserved a sitrep. Workshop is warming up. I have to finish Len Deighton's trilogy Hook, Line and Sinker and then there are no more excuses! Normal service must be resumed and motion made for the engines!

New bristles rammed/glued into the wooden bit with the holes in , or should one really have access to the rear ( which is of course inaccessable as the metal holder is peened or pushed in a jig into place to firmly hold it ).
