Site Tweaks, Bug Fixes and other Stuff

Post by Doc »

I've been tweaking the site and hopefully some of the bugs will have disappeared (Google API Key :gatlin: ) also I have re-jigged the blocks and columns throughout.

The recent topics on the portal page have now been expanded and should start to include all the latest info (A bit like how the old site displayed them).

News Hound has currently been recalled to the Kennel for a bit of RnR.

Other minor issues are being attended to as Work-In-Progress.

Portal Page looks cleaner and more inviting Doc. A lot more information with the current topics list. A step in the right direction taking into consideration the main comments about the layout.

Getting rid of the sidebar on the left will make it a lot better for people with small screens. By the way, I still got the Google intrusion first thing this morning.

Agree with all that. Better portal page layout, and removal of side bar. I too got the Google API thingie again just now. Thanks Doc! :cool4:

Bloody Google API error message, I've deleted the block, cleared the cache and it's still appearing.

I'm still getting it only once a session. Not a big problem but I know it's annoying. Feels like the old site.....
Just logging off. Haven't seen the Google pop-up this morning.

Only once a session for me too - using Firefox. What are you on Kev (no, don't tell us that, just say which browser  )

Firefox and Chrome here, the error is browser independent but the incidence has diminished considerably.

Until Doc did the latest tweaks I got it on every new page opened in a new tab.

Got it once on the portal page when logging in.

I'm still scratching my head after deleting the block of code that referenced the google map, I've cleared the servers memory cache to eradicate all traces of the offending code but the error message still appears.

I'm thinking that if I re-create the google map with a new google API key that things might resolve themselves. When I get time later today I will attempt to implement it and see what happens.

It must have left remnants about in other areas Doc, that's the problem with most applications, easy to install but a devil to fully purge. You may well be right about re-instigating the map with a new key, but isn't the error message version related? If so will this have a knock on?

Could the persistence be anything to do with cookies? I haven't seen the API notice so far today but I delete all cookies frequently and did so this morning before logging in.

Having just said I haven't seen the API bug today, it got me when I went to the `Read any good books' thread even though I'd already looked at lots of threads and made several posts.

It's a mystery isn't it. I have a suspicion that the way people log on to the site might have some bearing on it. I never bother about deleting cookies and have the site marked in Firefox preferences as my home page so when I go onto the web the portal page comes up automatically. if anybody cares to try this the address I have set for the home page is:
http://oneguyfrombarlick.co.uk/portal.php
Try setting this up as the home page and see how you get on. All the other browsers have this preference. Worth a try.... I haven't seen it for three days but of course it is random and this is no proof of anything. Of course it may be that the aroma of Condor Green scares it off......
Funny thing is that when I submitted this post it had edited the link address I typed so I've deleted it and made it into a link. Try it.

Why am I getting away so lightly? It's a mystery. I did notice this morning during a big upgrade on Firefox that there were files named Ubuntofox and wondered whether the operating system you are using is one of the parameters.... We need advice from Prof. Plugs!
