Obviously little support for them in the town. Reminds me of a shop I thought must have been there forever (but wasnt) that mum went to mainly for "foundation garments" for her and her family , located in the small block of shops at the tube station in London. Being London not counting the chains like Marks and Sparks there were more similar specialists at the market in the next suburban location toward London, and another the next further away - walkable but when you had shopping it was a bus ride. Not something I really seek out and they tended to switch to buying things by mail order when the one in the tube station closed.

A young lad called Robinson frequented the Greyhound pub. He was notable for the fact that he was very 'horsey'. He wore riding breeches and often spurs and had an entire pony stallion which he travelled to clients for stud purposes. (Yes, Barlick had it's share of characters!)
He told us a story once about Roy Laycock paying him to clean out the cottages to the left of the mill. One of them had been used by Roy's wife to store the stock in trade of a mail order operation she ran which sold erotic lingerie. The lad understood that the business wasn't doing well and he said it was no wonder. The Brassieres were defective, they all had holes in the cups......

As I have said before, I suspect many of these old images were done on a Sunday, there are so many people about and in this case children. But one man is stood in a shop doorway.... Could it be a weekday? I think it's before 1900 and notice that the road is paved with water-bound Macadam.

It's anybody's guess how long it was since this vise was first fastened to the tree next to Forty Steps. Long enough for it to be part of the tree. It disappeared when more houses were being built there about 30 years ago.

Ross Mill at Bacup at night. At one time this was a common sight in Lancashire, the great spinning mills lit up and running a night shift. A long forgotten corner..... Daniel Meadows compared them to great ships sailing up the valleys......
