CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING
Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING
A gentle reminder to avoid tipping points!...
`Climate change: Six tipping points ‘likely’ to be crossed' LINK
Note in particular: Co-author Ricarda Winkelmann, a researcher at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and a member of the Earth Commission, said: "Importantly, many tipping elements in the Earth system are interlinked, making cascading tipping points a serious additional concern."
These cascade effects are well-known to geologists from the history in the rocks.

Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING
That came as no surprise Peter to anyone who has been watching the lack of progress. Basically the scientists are saying that we have failed in our stewardship of the planet and there are no signs anything is about to change. Once again James Lovelock is right, he said a while ago it was too late. Sometimes I am glad I'm old but I look at my great grandchildren and fear for what they will experience.....

Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING
Exceptional storms, one in Alaska and a typhoon in Southern Japan are said to be the worst for decades reinforce once more that the climate is changing.

Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING
See THIS BBC report of the super typhoon Nanmadol that is hitting Japan over the weekend reminds us that there are advantages to having a moderate Atlantic based climate. 20 inches of rain in 24 hours is serious stuff and then there are the winds to contend with.

Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING
The nights are drawing in and the temperature is gradually dropping. Meanwhile the threat of higher energy prices is making people think twice about having the light on while watching the TV or better still moving the TV to the kitchen where its warmer. Shouts of 'close that door' and threats of docking kids spending money for leaving lights on will be back on the cards. Of course allowing the energy companies to make totally unjustified profits is part of the governments unpublished master plan for reducing global warming and to misquote Shakespeare its not for an ace but for all time. Borrowing money to give to the energy companies which incidentally will be paid for by the public but sold to the gullible as a reduction in bills for our everlasting benefit negotiated by the Tories is probably the biggest con trick since the benefit of Brexit,
As Mike Tyson says "everybody has a plan until they get smacked in the face". lets hope that this smack in the face will waken people up to what this government is up to.

Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING
It hasn't done so in the past Ken. The sheep still keep voting of the Tories who perpetrate the same con-tricks over and over again.
But back to climate change. I don't think it's fanciful to say that we are now over some sort of tipping point and exceptional events are almost becoming the norm! Overall, our version seems to be warmer winters overall. That may be quite a valuable asset this winter! (Mind you, the bastards will take the standing charges come what may.)
What I am not clear about is this. Truss says she is suspending 'climate levies' if I understand her correctly. Aren't these levies part of the standing charges the energy providers charge? If so does this mean that the charges will decrease?

Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING
It struck me yesterday that there may be a clue in the description given to Hurricane Ian which has just hit Florida.
It was described as 'a 500 year event'.
But somehow I doubt if it will be 500 years before there is one to match it.

Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING
Not happy with my name being associated with a killer Hurricane! I know they do them in alphabetical order and if they wanted a blokes name it would have been more appropriate to call it Ivan under the present world circumstance.
Ian

Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING
Indeed but it does sound weird having your name all over the national news.
I have often wondered why they attribute names to them, why not just an incrementing number. H235 or similar followed by H236 etc would be fine.

No, they all metamorphosed into Brexiteers, Truss supporters, anti-vaxers and flat-earthers.

"No, they all metamorphosed into Brexiteers, Truss supporters, anti-vaxers and flat-earthers."
That's a very persuasive theory Peter! One wonders how anyone could maintain that position in the face of the evidence we are getting. Time after time we hear phrases like "the worst in living memory" or, as in the case of Hurricane Ian; "a 500 year event". And we still collectively do stupid things like have a war that leads to a reaction where fossil fuels have to be used to survive. We'll be re-opening coal mines next......

Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING
Now Truss has `ordered' our climate-aware King Charles not to attend the COP meeting in Egypt where he had been expected to make a major speech. Is this an indication of the Truss government's attitude on the importance of countering climate change?

Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING
I don't believe the hype over the alleged orders to the King. Chuck had already said he realised that being monarch was a different ball game. He knows which side his bread is buttered. He will not want to rock any boats as he enters his tenure as monarch.

We shall see but I doubt if he will allow anything to come between him and his view of how monarchy should be exercised. He has suggested he is seeking reform and 'slimming down'. We have yet to see that.

Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING
Partly that but also everything else that will come with that level of climate change and will be felt locally. More and worse floods, wildfires, crop failures and much more migration of populations. We're already seeing increasing loss of snow and ice, which means less reflection of solar heat and greater warming of the darker sea and rock. Evidence from the geological past shows that leads to runaway heating and desertification.
