The Met Office have done it again, talking about the highest wind speed in recorded history on Stornaway this morning but I can remember a higher speed in a gale I was in on Eigg in the 1980s, 153mph recorded in the Cairngorms..... In that same wind it blew at over 120mph on Tiree for lomg periods. They didn't know what the maximum was as this was as far as there anemometer went....

Dry and breezy when we went shopping earlier this morning, now it is strong wind and lashing rain - very cold too.
Say only a little but say it well.

I got yesterday morning wrong, as Moh says, the wind and rain started later in the morning. Windy evening as well. This morning it's breezy, dry and very mild. Shipping forecast for Northern areas is horrendous again, lots of force 12 hurricanes. Glass is well down at below 28.7". Forecast is for rain likely all day. Very strong westerly wind and the temperature will rapidly drop from the double figures it is at now to close to freezing by tonight. Not a good day and the prospect of more to come over the next few days.

I can imagine you all sat in front of your open fires all bundled up and tucking into your evening meals, wind howling and the rain beating at the windows. Brrr... Stay warm and snuggled in. :)

Cathy I have just taken the ashes out from the stove and popped a shovel full of coal on (it stays in all night) and the wind has got up since 4AM and it's started raining. Jack's morning walk may be shorter than usual. I'm all for exercise but not cruel and unusual punishment! It is a lousy wet and windy morning out there!
The latest version of the forecast warns that the rain could turn to snow later tonight and it could freeze as well....
08:00. Jack and I went out fully expecting wet weather, I had full periscope up gear on... But lo and behold, breaks in the clouds scudding across and not a drop of rain. Even a patch of sunshine! But I think this is lulling us into a sense of false security. It's getting colder and it only needs a bank of heavy cloud from the west.....

It got quite wild between 5 and 6.30am, we recorded a gust of 55mph but I'm sure it's been stronger than that! Still blowing between 30 & 40mph and raining again now.
I watched the outdoor temperature shooting up from 6 to 12 degrees in about half an hour yesterday evening and I think its going to drop again this morning and bring us some snow.
Last night we tried sleeping in the spare bedroom as the wind noise is dreadful in our room, but we were still kept awake by the sound of a mouse nibbling away at something (sounded like the insulation board) in the roofspace and an unusually hard mattress!
A relief to find the polytunnel still intact this morning!

Glad you've had no damage Wendy. I think we have more wind to come but I don't think it will be any worse. It's almost certain we are going to see some snow, if not later today then tomorrow as the trend is for it to get colder. I know what you mean about the mice, they are noisy little buggers. I always used to say they waited until dark before they got on with building that garden shed in the ceiling......

A calmer night but colder and wet. Breezy and raining this morning. Glass went back further but is now back up to 29.2". Forecast is lousy but so was yesterday's and we had a lot of fine weather. The west wind will strengthen during the day and as it does the temperature will rise a bit but we won't notice it because of the wind chill. Low single figures all day, wrap up warm!
07:30. Jack and I have inspected the estate, to tern has been left unstoned... Breezy and very cold but dry. I was glad I had my North Face fleece on under the Crombie! Too dark to see if the cloud was broken. One thing is certain, wrap up warm Wendy when you do the hens and coddle the old horses.... Sooner you get out and more chance of being dry.

Yesterday wasn't too bad in the end but as night fell the wind and rain started. It is lousy out there this morning, breezy and a hard cold rain.... Glass is down to 28'8". Gale warnings in every sea area except Trafalgar. Forecast is for high winds and heavy rain until mid morning when both wind and rain could ease but it gets progressively colder all day dropping to about 2C this evening. According to the forecast it's 8C out there at the moment but it doesn't feel like it....

Thermometer in the car showed 6 degrees all the way from Barlick to Westhoughton. The M65 and M61 were like a river, lots of surface water.

I thought as much Kev. Jack and I are just back from our walk and we have been very lucky, a break in the rain so neither of us got wet. That wind is stronger as well I suspect. Very blustery and the forecast is changing slightly as the day goes on. The Met office has brought its prediction of snow forward, at the moment they say from midday onwards tomorrow but it wouldn't surprise me if we saw it sooner. This system is moving very fast....

It's cold, wet and breezy out there at the moment but not actually raining. The ground is sodden, any rain that falls is running straight off. Glass is down to 28.6". Forecast is for a mainly dry very cold day until noon when the chance of showers rises and these could well be sleet and snow even at low levels. It's about 3C at the moment but will get colder as the day progresses. A good day for being indoors next to the fire! Only good thing is that the wind has moderated and is now just a stiff westerly breeze.
08:00. We've done our inspection and are back i9n the warm... Very cold morning with an almost clear sky. Just a few isolated black clouds drifting in from the west, no doubt a precursor of things to come later, either rain or snow. Thinking about Wendy, she has no protection from this West wind.... Amazing what a difference that extra 500 feet makes. The town is on roughly 500ft above sea level. Wendy is nearer 1000 ft.

Our local snow line starts at about 650ft. We are just a shade above 700ft. Anything above this could be in for a tough time.

One of the odd things about living at near sea level in the Somerset Levels is that we get blasted by the West wind. There's nothing standing in its way!

It's pleasanter than it has been for days at the moment, though I had to chip ice off the car at 9.45 this morning! I don't mind snow if we are safe at home, but I do hate strong winds.

First spatters of snow at 15;00 in Barlick. I hope there isn't much. The cloud cover isn't heavy, there are patches of sunshine at the moment in between the spatters.

Clear and very cold this morning. No snow but there has been an ice shower during the night and the back street is covered with shot ice. Glass is rock steady on 28.6" Forecast is for a high chance of scattered snow showers until mid morning, then it becomes bright until this evening when it warms slightly and we could have rain. Moderate SW wind in the morning switching into the South in the afternoon and strengthening. They say an expected high of 3C but I can't see it getting that warm.....
Later.... The shipping forecast is dreadful, gales up to force 11 in all sea areas including those to the South of the Isles. Not good!
Oh, and I've just taken the ashes out from the stove, it is snowing gently......
07:50. We've had our walk, light snow falling when we went out but that has ceased now and we have broken cloud coming over. Untgreated surfaces are very slippy and I took a few pics for Maz and Cathy to make them homesick! (You're not missing much actually, it's bloody cold out there and the wind is getting up)

No Moh but I noticed them as well.... Someone out an hour before me and enjoying themselves. The snow thawed later in the day and night. This morning it's all gone and after a rough night it's overcast, dry and breezy with no frost. Glass is down like a stone on 28". Not a good sign! Forecast is for a mainly dry, bright, overcast and breezy day. Chance of rain rises this evening and it will get colder. Tomorrow looks dodgy!
07:30. We are back from a bracing walk in a stiff breeze but dry and an almost clear sky. Quite acceptable if you have a heavy North Face fleece on under your Crombie overcoat! No such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing choice! I went down the the butcher's a day early, I did the same last week but as it turned out I was four hours adrift with the onset of the wind and rain. I think I'm on safer ground this morning, no way is tomorrow morning going to be as good as this morning....

Same here Moh, a crisp clear sunny day with a cold wind. It started raining late evening and has continued on and off during the night with at times a very strong wind. At 21:30 it was falling as hard sleet... Glass has shot up to almost 28.5". Forecast is for a mixed day with some sunny spells around noon but a chance of a shower for most of the day. The temperature is falling and it will freeze tonight. Showers will be of sleet or snow and will become heavier as the day goes on and are coming in on a moderate WSW wind. Expected high of 1C. Nowhere near as nice as yesterday!
08:00. Back from our walk. Light wind, very cold and spatters of hard snow/sleet coming in occasionally from scattered cloud. The cold and the amount of cloud are set to increase later in the afternoon which is when it might get nasty. Expect a spell of sunshine around noon.
Noticed this morning.... A young man in shorts and a tee shirt walking across the Pioneer car park, coughing the while.... That figures......

Stanley...that man walking across Pioneer Carpark in shorts...obviously one of or lot!
Sometimes we yearn to feel the cold.
Lovely sunny day here today and we enjoyed a long walk by the river. A bit windy for my sun hat, so had to take it off, or risk it blowing in the water. Shorts and T-shirts order of the day. Footwear is thongs of course, and couldn't imagine wearing socks or closed in shoes this weather.
Across-the-road-neighbour's pet rabbit is quite an escape artist and we have captured and returned it several times lately, but it was here again today. It sits outside our full length windows watching us. It likes lettuce, but somehow manages to snaffle it without surrendering freedom. Quite a smart wee creature. I do worry it will come to a sticky end on the road though...
