Walton Windle

I have relatives in the States who are trying to discover what happened to Fred Windle, son of Walton Windle, born in Barnoldswick in 1889.
He married a Brenda E. Sellars in 1922. They eventually had 5 children and moved to Blackpool. I’ve tracked Fred to 1930 as a Building Contractor in Blackpool but he disappears after that. His wife and the 4 youngest children subsequently emigrated to the US in 1940.
On the 1939 Register his wife describes herself as married not widowed.
None of his children seemed to want to talk about him if the subject came up. His eldest child, Stuart Walton Windle, born 1924, is stated to be living in Halifax, UK in 1945. He emigrates and joins his family in the US in 1947.
Any help or ideas on where to look to solve the mystery of Fred would be most welcome.

Welcome to the site Tom. I can't help directly but we have looked at Windles before. I have reposted the Windle Index entries.

Mystery solved.
Sent for Fred Windle’s birth certificate to get exact date of birth. Then looked him up by that date in the 1939 Register and found him living in a flat in Wandsworth with a young widow. He describes himself as single, which he patently wasn’t.
He co-habits with his new lady until his death in Bognor Regis in 1963.
As Monty Python would put it, ‘a very naughty boy.’

Well done! The 1939 Register is a very useful tool, it has thrown up a few surprises for people I have been helping with research.

In my great grandma’s family we had a soldier called Private Thomas Pickering who was in the Northumberland Fusiliers, Thomas had a brother inlaw called Private Fred Windle who was in the Coldstream Guards .
