Re: DIALECT AND WORD MEANINGS

There is a mention in another thread of the local pronunciation of Whitworth. When I worked at Boots in Darwen in the 1960s the elderly storeman pronounced my home town as `Blegburn'.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?

Talking of supermarkets, when staff arrived to open the front doors of their supermarket in a small town in Hampshire yesterday they were shocked to find the ground in front of the doors strewn with dead hares. One door handle had a dead barn owl impaled on it and the other had a different bird. Nob...

Hands up anyone who knew about this new thing. My hand is up.. and yours should be too! You heard it first on OG when it was launched at the end of January. LINK Probably the most controversial aspect is the last item in your gov.uk link... Re: Old fashioned clean jokes

Kev, the Igor cartoon is funny but Terry Pratchett would tell you it can't be a real one of his famous Igors because they always have a lisp and would have said `Yeth, Mathter'.

Re: Wildlife Corner

The ones shown are in what used to be the drive up to a grand house in park land but is now an expensive housing estate. At the end and around the corner there is a gigantic cedar too. These trees are on a ridge and can be seen from many miles away and make it easy to pinpoint Taunton's position fro...

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?

I feel as though I've stolen Peter's fire! That's fine, you can serve up the pics to Cathy earlier than I can. I liked the one of the fox tightrope walking on a tree branch. We've seen them on TV crossing a stream using a fallen tree as a bridge but this one looks like it climbed the tree! They're ...

Re: Seen in the News

A 12-year-old Palestinian boy, Rami al-Halhouli, out with his mates yesterday at a refugee camp in occupied East Jerusalem made the mistake of rising to a `dare' and lighting a firework. Before the firework went off he was shot through the heart by an Israeli border police officer. At a press confer...

Re: Ancestry.co.uk

Yes, it's always good to have the information. In this case we're lucky because the relative concerned recently got a holiday flat in Spain. Also communication is so easy these days that he can send a copy of the image to one of his new Spanish friends for translation. This crazy modern world does h...

Re: Ancestry.co.uk

Thanks. I did a bit more googling and saw something saying Ancestry was working on its own 1921 data. Perhaps we'll see it in 3 years time! Typically, I've been side tracked from trying to find my South African ancestors by the easier job of tracing those of my cousin's husband, Mark. All going well...

Re: Seen in the News

Peter, I am getting very pessimistic about Ukraine's future. In case nobody has noticed, the US has already given up on funding them despite Biden's fine words. It's our future too and we're going to have to look after ourselves in Europe. We're carrying on as usual while the Europeans to the East ...

I have the same query about the cost of Johnson's trip to Venezuela. The Sunday Times first reported that Mr Johnson travelled there by private jet while on holiday in the Caribbean but someone paid and it wouldn't be Johnson! And Johnson didn't warn our Foreign Secretary of his visit to Venezuela ...

Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING

See THIS explanation from NASA about how ocean currents are affected by climate change. It's on the right level for me. Simple explanations are always best! :biggrin2: It's good to see simple graphics like those. The ocean currents graphic is the AMOC I referred to above. The cold water currents ar...

Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING

I wouldn't rule out tipping points. I'm not thinking of one big single tipping point that would be catastrophic worldwide, that's unlikely but individual ones could cause considerable upsets. The deep ocean currents that circle the globe could be changed suddenly by loss of ice at the poles.

I agree with you all. I don't have `a job', I'm not employed but in addition to my hobbies I'm currently researching family history for the husband of my cousin and have been transcribing a mineral identification document for the wife of one of Mrs Tiz's friends to use in their U3A geology group. Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS

Tripps would say this is spooky. I've just seen in an astronomy magazine an image sent back by one of those `rovers' on Mars. It show a rock shaped just like that but with no grass inside or outside, of course, and everything red in colour due to iron oxide content. The NASA folk believe that it was...

Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING

Sadly, I think the world's politicians and all the vested business interests have left it too late. Now we're seeing the world getting more fragmented and belligerent and you can't solve climate change without all nations agreeing to work together and put a stop to the decline.

But even when that's done Peter, you have to ask yourself what benefit faster and faster is. With full fibre we get 80mps but I think the major benefit will be in reliability in the long run. True.
