Re: Bluesinger's Musical Ramblings

Maxine disappeared from view some time in the fifties (I think). Then she reappeared in her eightieth year and did a grand tour. I remember seeing a wonderful TV programme at the time her tour was in tha UK. Absolutely marvellous for an eighty year old. Here is a link to part of Maxine's last tour. ...

Wonderful.
The Yorkshire dales are magical places and I was very sorry to leave them, but I was extremely happy to find that the Vale of York is infinitely drier and warmer.

Above, I wrote "I must look out the picture I found of an alternative way for Stanley to take his cod liver oil!" Now here it is, taken from Picture Postcard Monthly which as you know is one of my favourite magazines. The January 2012 issue has a whole article on postcards about cod liver...

Re: DIALECT AND WORD MEANINGS

There was a farmer's field behind the house were I spent my childhood and everyone called it `Johnny's Meadow' but I don't recall John being the name of the farmer. I wonder if it had some other meaning or was just used to denote any field close to home? Perhaps it was due to what was sometimes fou...

Re: Bluesinger's Musical Ramblings

Thankyou Cat , I don't think I've come across Maxine Sullivan ....but will do a bit of digging ! (I'm not very well up on Jazz and Swing etc , and it's lovely to be able to learn more , now that YouTube and Spotify are so freely available) Did see Lionel Hampton in Geneva in 1969/70, though....long...

Re: DIALECT AND WORD MEANINGS

Tiz, we have a path in Barlick that the older end still recognise as 'Shitten Ginnel'. I used an old saying that I heard first in Scotland yesterday. "A pup for the pavement but an old dog for the hard road". Anyone heard it south of the border? Presumably this Scottish aphorism is a guid...

Good as she was, I think she had a serious rival for top spot in Maxine Sullivan. Maxine was much less well known but in my opinion had as much ability as Ella.

Re: DIALECT AND WORD MEANINGS

I used the phrase `dickey ticker' and wondered why `dickey'? The Collins dictionary says that in this type of usage it's thought to derive from `As queer as Dick's hatband'. Now then, what on earth does that mean? An old aunt of mine used to say... " As queer as Dick's hatband,..and that went ...

What grabbed my attention is all these `Has thanked' and `Been thanked' numbers showing up under members' avatars - at least all except Sally above and me. Sally has the excuse of only just joining, but I've been loafing here for yonks. The truth is I just can't get motivated about that kind of box...
