Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
I think the photo enlargement display used by OG is very impressive. I’ve been trying to put together something similar using a free download “Lightbox” . So far its been an abject failure. Valium doesn’t seem to work for me. I must admit I’m a complete novice at HTML and Java. Has anyone had any su...

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
This lot just reminds me of my father's "tacklers" tool kit. I've still got a box full of leather punches, whitworth spanners, knives and other bits and bobs that he used. Although I must admit not in the same pristine condition as Stanley's.

“Who cares about what happens to the 85% of people at the tail end of the pecking order. There’s nothing wrong with a system that put me at the top! Re: PUBLIC SERVICE CUTS
I always thought it was the skivers fault that we are in all this trouble but now it appears to be the pensioners! Lady Williams – one of the champions of the health service's "free at the point of use" ethos – on Friday called for a rethink over the way the system is funded. In an essay f...

This plaque doesn't appear to be an original terrace plaque. ie: built at the same time as the houses. I would say its a private afterthought added quite recently. Therefore at a guess I would say Wellhouse Rd. Well + Den = Wellhouse.
Of course I've been wrong before.

Re: PUBLIC SERVICE CUTS
I have this cunning plan. Raise the Bank of England interest rate by 3%. This would result in massive mortgage default, No more house price bubble. No more housing shortage. At the same time stop all housing benefit payments. This would stimulate the renting sector and reduce the burden on central g...

Re: Should Classic books be made into Films
Thankfully we still live in a country where we have freedom of choice. As they used to say “you can like it or lump it” However, my opinion is not the issue. In my posting I was attempting to balance the “pros and cons” of the film industry. Are we to let them become “the Ministry of Truth” totally ...

Re: Lies, damned lies and statistics
I don't pretend to understand GDP. To me its all smoke and mirrors. Just because its an indicator that's measured on a regular basis it doesn't mean much at a personal level any more than saying money held in bank accounts is "XXX" amount. An excerpt from the Wiki definition is show below....

Re: POLITICS CORNER
Very interesting figures. However, the Bank of England has just created £375 billion of electronic money out of thin air (quantitative easing) and given it to the banking system. Eventually this money will have to be returned or lost through inflation. My bet is on the latter. Interest rates will ri...

Re: Lies, damned lies and statistics
Perhaps I should come clean and say “yes” I was taking a swipe at those who speak with forked tongue. I must also declare that I think both the NHS and education are moving down a total privatisation route. Even the “American Dream” has now been consigned to the dustbin of history with the rich gett...

Should Classic books be made into Films
Should the Classic books be made into films. At first this statement sounds like a “ no brainer ”, to use the modern idiom. It opens up the book world to millions who would have never had read these classics. Period novels and history can be shown in their appropriate settings of which we have now n...

Re: Lies, damned lies and statistics
Keep dripping the bad news and eventually they will be able to prove that the NHS is not fit for purpose. Then we shall have to introduce some good old fashion competition where people can make informed choices and get the service they want. Of course there will be some element of added costs to the...

Not exactly in the “lately” category but willing to sit down and read again. Looking at current events both at home and abroad I would recommend.. Spies / Surveillance “1984” George Orwell. Capitalism / Austerity “Animal Farm” George Orwell. World order / Satire “Brave New World” Aldous Huxley. Afgh...

Re: Barrowford and Pendle History site
This is what I call "insider information". I guess this confirms it was William Tunstill that built the Chapel. So far the books by John A Clayton don't go into the small detail but suggest that it was proposed to build a "Primitive Methodist Chapel" in 1888. I wonder if the bras...

Re: THE PUBLIC CLOCK
I’m not sure if some of “the good old days” were in fact all that good. I remember my father saying how degrading it was to see people lined up hoping that fellow weavers would be late for work. Often these poor people were too ill to work but by necessity had to work just to survive. As you pointed...

Thanks Colin. (normally I can't do anagrams). I've just picked up a couple of books by John A Clayton on Lower / Central Barrowford but haven't had time to digest them yet. I did a full family tree on the Burnley Dugdale's and I know they were instrumental in funding churches and church schools. (th...

I’m sorry if there is a vagueness to this posting but when you know nowt this is what you get. Passing through Barrowford I noticed that the current “Pendle Community Church”, Scotland Rd. (adjacent to the College), that the window terminals facing the main road carried two carved heads. See sample ...

The Last Muster. By Hubert von Herkomer (1875) I’ve always rather liked this painting. “Sunday at the Royal Hospital Chelsea”. Showing a fellow “Pensioner” checking the pulse of his companion. What a way to go. No fuss, no bother. Just quietly fading away. Remember “More people rust away than wear a...

Probably like most men of advanced years you start to wonder how much time you have left before you shuffle off this mortal coil. The good news is that by the time we reach 70 nearly 80% of us are still here. The bad news is that at 95 statistically we have all gone. Roughly a straight line decline ...

If you ever feel like giving yourself a good headache get a suitable book by Sir Roger Penrose. His last book "Cycles of Time" explains how the universe will come to an end when entropy equals zero. Ie. absolute zero temperature. Anyhow, that's what I think he said. Fortunately, it may be ...
