Re: Brown family of Thornton in Craven

Hi Richard How lovely to find another Thornton in Craven Brown descendant. I have a lot of Brown information I would like to share but probably this would be best off-forum. But regarding falls from ladders - my father told me that Thomas Watson (possible illegitimate son of Robert Brown, older brot...

Re: Gill(Ghyll)House(Hall)Farm 1813-1830

Thanks Stanley. It was just a thought that I had that there might be a mining connection in the Gill House area. As you say, maybe there was a work opportunity in the quarry, canal or railway. I need to get more background on what the ups and downs of lead/silver mining were in Rimington and Greenho...

Re: Gill(Ghyll)House(Hall)Farm 1813-1830

I am returning to this topic after finding out a bit more about my Watson forbears. Thomas Watson's wife, Margaret (nee Simpson) was the daughter of a lead miner at Greenhow Hill, between Grassington & Pateley Bridge. I also found out there was silver/lead mining at Rimington not far from where ...

Re: Brown family of Thornton in Craven

Re: Bobbin Mill at Booth Bridge. I now have the 1891 census return for Robert Brown, Bobbin Turner and he is still a bobbin turner aged 54 but at an address in Blackpool. Maybe he re-located with the Wilkinsons who went to Heysham? But it seems too far away. In 1881 he was in Burnley and a brewer's ...

Re: Trawden corn mill

Thanks Wendy. I will check out that link. My friend said "my 6th and 7th great grandparents were both Martin Huit, millers in Trawden. Would anyone know anything about milling in Trawden (or possibly Winewall) as it is a deep valley, so I supposed it would probably be run by water rather than w...

Trawden corn mill

A friend would like to find out more information about Trawden mill as her ancestor was a miller there. I know it's not the Barlick area but maybe some of the experts on this forum would know where to find information online? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Regards
Carole

Re: Brown family of Thornton in Craven

Wow, thanks for all that, Stanley. Robert Brown was a Bobbin turner and living at Booth Bridge in 1862 when his child, Charles Frederick was born. His brother, Isaac Brown was also a bobbin turner in 1861 aged 17, presumably working at the same place. So bobbin turning must have been carried on here...

Re: Brown family of Thornton in Craven

Hi everybody I have been trying to fill in this Brown family and bring it back to the present. If I can find living male descendants I might be able to persuade some and my male cousins to do a Y-DNA test to confirm that Robert Brown sired my great grandfather, Thomas Watson. I have found a lot of c...

Re: Brown family of Thornton in Craven

Does this mean William Browne was the Parish Clerk as well? The one I think is Robert Browne Snr's father was married in 1850 but I don't know his age. He is shown as a labourer or husbandman in the church registers. Did a parish clerk collect Land Tax? I'm afraid my local history knowledge is thin....

Re: Brown family of Thornton in Craven

Yes, I have the Earby Hist. Soc. Thornton records - got them when I was researching my Berry family (mother's side). Never thought they would come in useful for my father's side. But I get a bit confused as the Brown/ Browne spelling seems to be interchangeable. It seem to fit that Robert Browne sen...

Yes sorry, Hainsworth not Haythornthwaite.
Thanks for the other facts, Wendy. Looks like I can get my line quite a bit further back now. Do you know if there are any records for the Almshouses in Thornton?

Re: Brown family of Thornton in Craven

I am just running through the facts:- Thomas Watson baptised at Ghyll Church 28/03/1830 son of Robert Browne of Nuttercotes and Ellen Watson of Gill House, illegitimate. Thomas states born at Gill House on several census returns. I cannot find any Robert Browne's in the Ghyll registers except one bu...

Re: Gill(Ghyll)House(Hall)Farm 1813-1830

Interesting Information, Elise. Maybe the Watson girls worked for Robert Proctor, Esquire? Wendy is helping me with Robert Brown on another topic. This one will concentrate more on the history of Gill Hall.

Re: Brown family of Thornton in Craven

This is very exciting (for me anyway), Wendy. I knew about the Brown(e) family in Thornton in Craven but I didn't know Christopher was at Nuttercotes. This does seem likely that Robert (of Nuttercotes) was the Robert in this family born in 1790 and bapt. 1791. It seems Robert might be the "blac...

Re: Gill(Ghyll)House(Hall)Farm 1813-1830

Hi Wendy It looks like the Robert Brown who married Isabella Hainsworth is the likeliest candidate as father of Thomas Watson. If he married Isabella in 1834 he was unmarried at the time of Thomas' conception in 1829.Robert would have been about 38 then & 43 when he married Isabella. A bit late....

Re: Gill(Ghyll)House(Hall)Farm 1813-1830

Thanks everyone for all the information and photographs of Gill House. I will have to make a trip to Barnoldswick Library to see what I can find about the Gill House area in the early 19th century and any mentions of the Watson family and Robert Brown. I have a record of the 1841 census of a Robert ...

Re: Gill(Ghyll)House(Hall)Farm 1813-1830

Thanks for that Wendy. Looks like my Great Great Grandmother had a lot of illicit relationships! My line, if you can believe the register, is from Robert Brown (at Nuttercotes in 1829) - that's going to be difficult to trace further back. Why can't he have had an unusual name?

Re: Gill(Ghyll)House(Hall)Farm 1813-1830

Thank-you Stanley, Wendy & Elise. It is obviously a building with a complicated historical and architectural past. What a pity there are no paintings or sketches of it around 1800. The Watson family were definitely in Newsholme near Gisburn around the turn of the 18th & 19th centuries and th...

Re: Gill(Ghyll)House(Hall)Farm 1813-1830

Thank-you David. Elise, you have filled in a few gaps but I am puzzled by the Baptism of Isabella, d. of Ellen. I knew Ellen had a daughter Isabella, named after her sister, but this one was baptised at St.Paul's , Little Marsden on 30/07/1837 and the dates in subsequent censuses confirm the approx....

Gill(Ghyll)House(Hall)Farm 1813-1830

I may have asked about this place in the old website but I have a bit more information now. I am trying to find out about any associations for the Watson family with Gill House in the early 19th century. I have Thomas & Margaret(nee Simpson)WATSON from the Newsholme, Gisburn area with possibly 7...
