Re: GOOD TV

Don't laugh... We watched a film called A Flash of Genius about Robert Kearns who invented the intermittent windscreen wiper and his battle against The Ford Motor Company who stole his invention and claimed it as their own. Seriously, we both thought is was quite good although it made very little mo...

Re: Who could forget this bloke?

That's one reason why I have a walk onto the Square or a sit opposite the bookies every day. Ahhh, so this is the famous "bookie watch" I keep hearing you mention. Your bench will be around where the old railway station used to be then, maybe a bit to the left if looking from the bookies....

Re: DIALECT AND WORD MEANINGS

Good ones and common once of a day in Barlick. 'Barn' for going and 'loising' for going home time(Workers being set loose). I assume that "Banner be" or "Barner be" is a corruption "Bound to be" meaning "sure to be" or "going to be" Another that cro...

Re: Who could forget this bloke?

Thanks Kev. Mick, have you read forgotten corners? Absolutely. In fact I read that piece of yours shortly after rejoining OGFB and thoroughly enjoyed it. The decline of the pubs is sad. A great institution slipping away. More and more we are becoming isolated from each other, in my opinion. Covid h...

As you can tell, neither of us has picked up on this American accent thing. Mind you, we've only lived here 26 years... People here often comment how they "love my accent" I usually say "what accent" :laugh5: I must admit that the way I talk catches peoples attention. I'm always ...

Who could forget this bloke?

Dixon's Ice Cream They never sold anything fancy like the other van's that came around. Nothing air whipped No fancy music either, he stuck his arm out the van window and rang a big hand bell. Great Ice Cream. Maybe I should have put this in the Forgotten Corners thread.... :( https://www.oneguyfrom...

Re: Lothersdale Quarry

Wendy Many thanks for sharing that, it was great! I remember when you drove through the quarry there were two arches that you drove under, one for each direction the traffic was going. I don't remember the arches being that high but maybe they were as I saw this in your film.... https://www.oneguyfr...

Lothersdale Quarry

I was looking on line today and it seems that Lothersdale Quarry has now been flooded. I remember when we used to drive from Bradford to Earby in the early to mid 1960's we would take the road which went through the actual quarry. If they were blasting, this section of the road would be closed to tr...

Driving FAQ

Well, I had nothing better to do so.... Driving FAQ Why do we have speed limits? Speed limits are put in place to keep the majority of traffic at a reasonable speed. These limits can be ignored if: 1. You are in a hurry or are late for your destination. 2. The person in front of you is annoying and ...

Wendy. I think my wife's mum worked at that mill.

EDIT

I slump, corrected.
Her mum worked at a mill on Khyber (sp) street and at Thomas Masons as a weaver.

Tonight will be Cauliflower Soup. A great favourite of ours. My wife usually adds a leek in there too.
My job is to cut up the cauliflower and grate the stalk (which works as a thickener).

Once I've done that I stand back and let the missus work her magic.

Returning to Persimmons for a moment... There's an "old wives tale" that you can predict the weather from the seeds inside the fruit. If the inside of the seed looks like a fork, the area can expect a mild winter; a spoon, a lot of snow; and a knife, bitter cold “cut like a knife” winter. ...

I'm glad I've made it because temps have dropped somewhat here now.
In fact I'm having a mug of Oxo right this minute.
