Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS

It is so heavily made that it looks like it has a specific purpose, not just using it as a general purpose chisel. Something to do with railway tracks? Knocking out the spring clips that hold the line to the sleeper? I'm making this up as I go along... :biggrin2:

Re: Back Under Canvas

There was a bloke on one of the local Facebook marketing sites selling a used once 6 berth family frame tent, (about £500 worth) for £50 the other week. Some folk buy in big style and then realise that getting up with the sun, funny farmyard smells and the like is not really for them, Might find on...

Nothing is made in the UK these days I've just bought a new radio and it says 'Built in Antenna" - I don't even now where that country is.

Re: MEDICAL MATTERS

Laura commented on the fact that my feet and legs are only 16 years old and I told her I put that down to lots of long distance cycling in my youth and a life full of hard work. I am convinced that what keeps me straight now is walking with Jack. That early morning walk is better than all the pills...

Been fine all week on the East coast and it's set to improve.Ready for the off, over the hills and far away... Enjoy yourselves, Ian. Last time I was under canvas was around 1993, alongside the River Wharfe at Grassington with my 15 years old son. All I can say about that experience, today'...

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

The site has just slowed down seriously, it's been fine all morning up to now. It's because all the kids in the northern hemisphere are on holiday and have nothing better to do than clog up the internet by playing online computer games which are very demanding on bandwidth. It will improve when the...

Kev has got it! See THIS explanation. It is 'crank punishment' used in prison as either punishment or as part of a sentence of imprisonment with hard labour.I see it is also the origin of the term 'screw' for warders as this refers to them adjusting the mechanism to vary the amount of effort needed...

No honeymoon, we had a house to finish doing up!
Very sensible. My latest wife cost 9rmb (about 56 pence at that time) for the civil service and we had a restaurant meal for 4 people afterwards. Mind you, she's cost me a bit since then.

They'll have to save up for a long time...I read recently that the average cost of a wedding in the UK is now £30,000! Incidentally, one of the advantages of belt driven lathes is the fact they are a smooth drive and give a better finish if used properly with sharp tools. Even the best gear driven lathes have a trace of harmonics in the drive from the gearing, especially on face turning, you can detect a pattern in...

I'm thinking the wrong thing. I thought it was for applying metal rivet/buttons to reinforce denim jeans on the pocket corners etc. Is this what you would use on the sectional drive belt on Johnny's lathe?

If a clean and virtually free source of energy could be harnessed, some chemical reactions for locking up CO2 would become viable. Someone is collecting huge amounts from carbon taxation. Is this money going in to research?

Will Life survive? Earlier Stanley mentioned the Permian Extinction, but it was just one of several great extinctions. Did the latest extinction end 12000 years ago (with >50% of mammal species being eliminated) or is it still on-going? In geological time spans, say 100,000 years into the future, do...

Re: Old fashioned clean jokes

You're lucky to get away with that one. In some of the big China famines there were reports of families giving their children away because they couldn't feed them. There was a strong suspicion that these babies disappear for good. Very sad. Especially girls. Some of the births wouldn't be registere...
