Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

I'm fundamentally a cheapskate at heart, but I get involved with a lot of cheap laptops being overwhelmed by Windows 10 especially during updates. In comparison to what I would consider daft priced computers (any thing Apple or some gaming machines) £450 is modest, but in £200 land it isn't. I have ...

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

Modest often equates to El Cheapo..... Like Panbiker, I can't agree with that Stanley. I think we're having different interpretations of the word `modest' here. I would regard Pluggy's `£450-ish' as modest after most of the laptops I saw in my web search yesterday were over £500 and many were over ...

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

Don't get a "modest" priced laptop with Windows 10, it will drive you nuts when it updates which is a frequent occurrence. Minimum i3 processor, 8GB Ram and an SSD if you want to keep your sanity. Think £450 ish.

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

Three machines all on Windows 10 upgraded when they were giving it away. Solid ever since excepting a hard disk failure in one machine which was not related to the OS. Don't tell everyone, but You can still update to Windows 10 from Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1. You can't actually upgrade it but Ins...

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

I'm on Windows 10 and trouble-free too. I thought you guys were mainly using Ubuntu. Stanley, Tizer and myself use Ubuntu. The others haven't forsaken the true faith. :biggrin2: I do run Windows 10 on a VM for the odd times I need a Windoze box. Its fine on a reasonably quick machine, its torture o...

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

Ian has asked me to look into it. He have a pretty high end package for OGFB, the limit we're closest to is file handles, the storage and pretty much everything else being unlimited. We're using 172,000 odd files from a limit of 262,000 odd. 31,000 of our used file handles are in the old Archive sit...

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

Easy answer, a battery makes no difference to the FIT payments. You're paid for what you generate + you're deemed to export 50% of it. It makes no odds whatever if your export drops as mine has done with the batteries. Unlike the panels with a feed in tariff, a battery is unlikely to pay for itself....

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

Does the .pdf/.jpg disappear from the print queue when it doesn't print ?. Have you tried forcing another application to open the file rather than the default ?, Chrome/Chromium / Firefox should open and print .pdf for example. Have you looked for the latest driver for the printer ? It will almost c...

Re: POLITICS CORNER

It's no laughing matter China. P is quite accurate, there are two Tory parties, one of them is the ERG. Yes, and we have two Labour parties, so it's even worse! I do feel sorry for the BBC. Rees-Mogg was complaining on the Today programme this morning that the BBC (and especially `Today') are `left...

There was an electric car (a real one, not an hybrid) being charged on one of the new posts on Ellis street when I walked past today.

Got a labour flyer so probably a panbiker special. Nice colour job, not reeking of old engine oil.........

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

At a guess, the old machine has a HDD, rather than an SSD, 4GB of RAM rather than 8 and a slower processor than the new one. The old one was a pretty decent machine in 2013 when I built it, the new one is a pretty decent machine today. Stuff has moved on. You give it something serious to do and the ...

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

I've not quite got the gist of Gloria's story here but unless you're a hardline geek running a server via an ordinary ISP. You do not need to enable a Dynamic DNS service. Its nothing to do with the IP address the ISP loans you for your internet to work (not quite true but it may as well be). Its so...

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

Stanley, It's not compression that's important, it's the archiving aspect. When you make a zip file your data is both compressed and wrapped up in a single file (archived). Compression isn't important for me because most of my GBs of data is JPG files which are already individually compressed when ...

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

Archive manager doesn't work here either. What does work is highlight what you want in the zip in 'Files', right click and select 'Compress' from the drop down menu. To get over the problem with SMR disks and lots of files would require that the file table wasn't updated but created anew when you ad...

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

In most scenarios it makes sense, but mass copying is a big negative. Quick at writing, quick at reading, slow as hell at rewriting. The cache takes the edge off some rewriting activity. But it can't do thousands of files.
