Re: DIALECT AND WORD MEANINGS
Interesting isn't it? Col was having a big moan about the weather and I told him not to worry because it was all uphill from now, meaning today was the worst and it was due to improve. He couldn't grasp that concept, seeing downhill as an improvement!

Re: Kelbrook Inn mystery
It's all guesswork unfortunately! I wonder if there was an older inn on the packhorse route that was rebuilt? There doesn't appear to be a house associated with Dotcliffe Mill, could it have been built as a mill owners house? A trip to Wakefield has to be my next move....

Kelbrook Inn mystery
A friend whose grandmother's family lived in the cottages at the top of Dotcliffe Road during the mid 20thC has asked me what I know of the history of these cottages. The answer was not a lot that isn't guesswork! I have posted on here before that the 3 cottages were once a substantial Inn known as ...

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
I spent quite a bit of time in Nottingham in my youth, a lovely city. My brother was at University there and I started 'going out' with one of his house mates there. So many hours spent on buses travelling between Doncaster, where I was at college, and Nottingham. I have vague memories of quite a fe...

We were there for 20 years Stanley. The question is, will the singing of anti English songs be considered a hate crime?

Re: Seen in the News
It must have been a localised thing We3ndy. I never found it in the farming community but the Orange Me3n were very active in the towns I travelled through up the West side of Scotland. [/i] The sectarianism is largely confined to the central belt Stanley, I found the Orange marches particularly un...

Re: Seen in the News
The Hate Crime Act coming into force in Scotland. Interesting to someone like me who, loving Scotland and the Scots, moved up to Scotland in 1979 and was shocked by the religious hatred we found and the overwhelming hatred of the English which instigated our move back south 20 years later. I wonder ...

Re: Wildlife Corner
Well done Cathy. There was a curlew strolling around in the field yesterday, I had my phone but the curlew was too far away to get a good shot. I got my rarely used camera out of the cupboard, dashed back to the window and focused in on the bird just as it took off!
Re: GOOD TV
Same here Gloria except that Canal Journeys has had a lot of footage cut out. In the original programme we saw more of his trip through this area. There was only a brief mention of the Foulridge Tunnel and his overnight stay in Barnoldswick. Unless I fell asleep of course! :laugh5: Just a mention th...

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
I came across that problem the last time I went to Devon. I had pre booked tickets from Skipton but the Leeds train was delayed, another earlier Leeds train arrived but I was told I couldn't get on it as my tickets were for the delayed train. If they were booked seats you could understand but they a...

That sounds like fun Sue! When my brother and sister in law lived in York I bought them this book about the Snickleways of York. I don't know if they ever used it, but I would love to! https://www.waterstones.com/book/a-walk-around-the-snickelways-of-york/mark-w-jones/mark-w-jones/9781871125771 Wel...
