Re: It's Valentine's Day 2016 and......

Thanks for the welcome, no not long gone, and not forgotten either, very nice. Glad the stove is going strong Stanley, and that your birthday was so well attended. Nice to see all of you again.

Re: Dangers of Scotland leaving the UK

As someone pointed out, this decision, if it splits the UK, will have long lasting far reaching effects for our children and grandchildren...except for Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeon...who don't have any!

Re: Dangers of Scotland leaving the UK

I am beginning to wonder, now that is has been revealed that Cameron narrowed the ballot down to just two options, YES or NO, when Salmond wanted a third..that proposed yesterday...that the whole thing has not been an attempt by the Tory party to get rid of Labour forever, and the SNP are just pawns ...

Re: Dangers of Scotland leaving the UK

That kind of polarisation will be the outcome I fear, China, and you have a point, the Scots formed the union with the rest of the UK for their own economic benefit, they weren't invaded or conquered as many would have us believe, I wonder how they would be feeling now if the Uk had decided to hold ...

Re: Dangers of Scotland leaving the UK

It is nice to see this topic being debated in a serious, thoughtful way. Having spent nearly half my life in Scotland, with much of my family still living there, it is a topic very close to my heart. I agree that those who are Scots born and bred should have a vote, wherever they live, it is going t...

Re: LOSING WEIGHT

I've come into this conversation a bit late, but hope it encourages you weight losers to know that my friend who had been diabetic for around six years recently decided, with her Dr's blessing, to try the 500 calories a day diet that is supposed to cure diabetes. She was pretty sceptical, especially...

Re: THAT'S A GOOD LINE!

When I turned forty someone chanted "mirror, mirror on the wall, I am my mother after all." I laughed but all these years later as I turn the top of the stairs there is a mirror opposite me and that saying goes through my head, more true now than ever!

Re: DIALECT AND WORD MEANINGS

Stanley, could your scottish lady have been referring to a stenter? It's the name I use for my clothes prop as I heard it often in my part of Scotland and thought it much more appropriate as a description of what I was doing to the line, than prop. This thread brought me back on here as I was remind...

Re: DIALECT AND WORD MEANINGS

I had a similar experience to you Stanley, when speaking to an American woman on the phone, I asked her if she had been born in Ireland because her vowel sounds were Irish, (having done linguistics like me you will know it's the vowel sounds that make an accent), She was taken aback as she had never...

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...

Congratulations Sue, hope it's not long before Erin is in your arms. Been a funny old day today, one family member taking falls, two family members fighting C, one family member struggling to find work, one family member with alzheimers. But the crocuses look beautiful in the spring sunshine.

Just a little aside on the flooding, Countryfile last night blamed the sheep farmers, apparently if all the hills were left to go back to scrub there wouldn't be flooding. Personally I am in favour of doing more of our own food producing, not less,

Re: Family Matters

Yes, my mum used to open them before she went to bed so that no one could judge at what time the house rose! and I too remember the village main street all with it's curtains closed as a funeral passed by. Hence the saying "it's curtains for you!" i guess!

Re: DIALECT AND WORD MEANINGS

"Hefted", Stanley, a very common term in Cumbria farming circles. We left just as foot and mouth was ending, the grief at the slaughter of hefted animals was tangible. The sheep had been reared for generations on the same patch of fell, and they knew their own territory. How would the fells ever be ...

This project is what led me to the site years ago, and it's great to see that time has been taken not only retain it but to add pictures, a great idea. Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?

I was saddened to hear of your family split Thomo, there have been a few occasions like this in our family, and all I can say is try to keep the doors of communication open, even though your heart is breaking. It does take time, but I feel it's our responsibility as parents, because,as they sometime...

Re: DIALECT AND WORD MEANINGS

As I told this young chap it's roots are Greek, the Latinisation will have come when the Romans conquered the Greeks, and it will have been brought in to our language when the Romans arrived here! Nice that words track history, or used to , the "muses" ending strikes me as just dumbing down, and sad...

Re: DIALECT AND WORD MEANINGS

I got caught up in a debate over the plural of Hippopotamus with a twenty year old the other day, they insisted the plural was hippopotamuses, and I, hippopotami. in the end I googled it and got a graph that showed the usage of these two plurals, the one I was using was the most common from the earl...
