Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS

Tiz, one of the things I noted and found quite peculiar when I was in Berlin was that so many continental medicines were used as suppositories. I remember my dad being given medication for his breathing and he was quite concerned as to how something he pushed up his bum could help his chest. I taxed...

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?

Yes but I can remember some remarkable fogs in the Vale of York in the days when I delivered regularly at Lincoln and Carleton Dairy at 05:30 in the morning.... When you surmounted the rise at Gringley on the Hill it was a sea of fog as far as the eye could see. Happy Days!

Re: BEWARE! THE BANKS ARE OUT TO GET YOU!

Whippy, so why the steep rise in complaints about bogus loans? Tiz, interesting comments about direct debit. I have always regarded these as a non interest bearing savings account (rather like my current account at the bank) and never worry about the payments as long as they level out once a year. H...

Re: DIALECT AND WORD MEANINGS

From memory 'twerp' was an immature goldfish. Field names: At Marton there was a Harry's Field near Gledstone. Who knows who Harry was, these names entered common usage and stuck, just as fascinating a field as place names. Seek out 'The Living Fields' by Harlan. Published by Cambridge it gives a lo...

Re: ENERGY MATTERS

Didn't need to look at the link. I noted the latest objection to the wind turbine at Yarlside and wondered what percentage of time during the year the dreaded 'flicker' will fall on the Coronation site. Amazing ingenuity, anyone living under the beam of a lighthouse should take note and enter an obj...

Re: WASTE NOT WANT NOT

Whippy, market for veal isn't big enough to absorb the surplus bull calves and many are wrong breed anyway. The official story is that they are shot and sent for rendering. Being an old cynic I think there could still be a trade in 'bobbies' for making meat stock but have no knowledge. It costs a bu...

Re: THE HOLLY AND THE IVY PART ONE

Not sure Whippy. Apart from the practical uses of holly there were many traditions associated with it and it was often used as a boundary marker. I know of people who would never carry a holly stick, regarded as bad luck. One use for it was to make mock ebony for teapot handles, if it is stained bla...

Re: READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?

Lovely to read about others who still enjoy a good book. Will finish Bomber today, might even pull another of Len's books off the shelf. You learn so much because he has researched in depth and the little known facts of seemingly trivial matters gives you unexpected insights.

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...

Sue, the worst news. Of course in your heart you knew that it was just a matter of time but it's a hammer blow when someone actually tells you. Only consolation is he's in the right place with good palliative care. If he could articulate it he would be telling you to stop worrying about him and look...

I'm glad I'm a simple minded old fart, all I bother about is whether the site does what it says on the tin and as far as I go, it's doing OK. Keep head cool Doc, all this learning is impressive but could overheat your head! Glad we've got someone competent doing it, what would a consultant cost?

I like them Maz! Impressive amount of work, no wonder Bagpuss is languishing. Why does my mind keep skipping back to the thread we ran once on knitting vaginas? (I'll bet that was a mistake, no doubt someone will tell me! Puts tin hat on and hides under table.)

Re: SPRING 2012

Managed two walks round Valley Gardens yesterday but only safe place to walk was on the crunchy snow. Hard frost again. Glass is still creeping up, 30.7" this morning. Sign of settled weather and not what we want to see this morning. We are as late as anywhere in the country but the crocuses ar...

If you look in the local history forum, rare texts, you'll find I have posted Warner's History of Barnoldswick which is essentially the history of the church. Good read for you and all you'll ever need to know about Gill Church and St James'.

WARNER. A HISTORY OF BARNOLDSWICK

A HISTORY OF BARNOLDSWICK By Rev. J H Warner BA. Priced at 1/6 (seven and a half new pence). Published by the Craven Herald. 1934. [This text has sunk into obscurity and it needs to be more accessible as it contains much original research based on original documents. Well worth a read….] A Foreword....

Just back from a very careful walk round Valley Gardens. Terrible underfoot and on unsalted side roads. Be careful out there. Glass rising, almost 30.6". Forecast for tonight is an even harder frost.

Re: READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?

Finished Cosgrave on Powell. Not an easy read but the research is good and I found some good quotes and new insights. Not sorry to put it back on the shelf! Triggered by TV on Bomber Boys I got Len Deighton's 'Bomber' out for another read. Still a good read... enjoying it.

Watching 'Bomber Boys' triggered me into reading Len Deighton's 'Bomber' again. Good read time after time..... Bad weather damages walks and work in the shed but encourages reading!
