Re: WILD ? .."I was LIVID" !..(Wildlife Corner)

I can never see the word snipe without thinking of Audenshaw. And vice versa. It was on the destination blind of buses in Manchester which I saw every day.
Audensahw (The Snipe). I think the steeplejacks are familiar with the establishment.

"Acting as a Dew Pond ?"

Never thought of that - perhaps that's it. Thanks. On the other hand it hasn't happened before in two and a half years. The jury is still out.

Lloyds announce £3,000,000,000 loss today. They rang me up on Wednesday, and asked if they could help me to manage my savings. I'm still smiling at the irony of it all.

Re: TIZER'S SCIENCE NEWS

Isn't that odd. I'd never heard of Mount Pinatubo until yesterday, when I looked up local rainfall figures to follow up my post about my pond. There were some photos there of the red sunsets in Royston, which followed the eruption of this volcano in Luzon, in the Phillipines, when the dust had blown...

Sorry - not guilty. The outside tap has been switched off and drained down since last November. The previous winter it froze, and split.

Re: CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING

I'm a bit puzzled about this drought. I live on the edge of E. Anglia, and although the local stream is low, the pond of my water feature is full (just from rainwater) for the first time since I've been in this house, and that covers three winters now. Time will tell.

Re: We all Love A Moan, What Annoyed You Today...

When I lived on Tyneside in the 70's there was a gamedealer in the Bigg Market who sold rooks. I can't imagine eating them, but someone must have done at the time. Hangover from the hungry thirties perhaps, and don't forget the "four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie".

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY

When ignorance is bliss..... I had a similar situation last week - no internet connection . Phoned Plusnet (free of charge) connected after about 3 minutes to a lady in Sheffield, who talked me through the local tests, which established that the problem lay with them, rather than me. She said it was...

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?

I had never seen the side panel adverts since the changeover. Having now seen how to switch them on and off via the little blue arrow, I now understand what has been annoying some members. They annoy me too, especially the flashing bingo numbers lottery ad. The other ads though, have very little imp...

Re: DIALECT AND WORD MEANINGS

Never heard of Lopid - but it also seems to be an anti cholesterol drug. Nearest I've heard was in the army when 'goppin' seemed to have the same meaning. It's odd how certain words which you haven't heard for a long time remind you of certain people. Makes me think of Scots and Geordies. It's in th...

I think everyone who posts should make a small donation towards the site costs. I of course have recently done so, and can recommend it, as it gives you a warm glow, and a strange feeling of smug superiority. They say it also avoids the ads, although I didn't find them as annoying as others ...

Re: GOOD TV

Have you seen the series (BBC2 I think) which follows a British worker doing his equivalent job in a third world country. I've seen a bin man in Indonesia, a fisherman in Sierra Leone, and a train driver working in Peru. Graphic Tv in which each emerged with the greatest respect for the work of his ...

Wel - I checked my will was in good order, and carefully snipped the packaging. The contents were still double wrapped in heavy polythene, but I didn't care at all for the smell or the look of them, and they were put in the bin. Instead I had a pack of value Kipper fillets. Ingredients Herring 95% S...

http://www.conjunctivitis.com - A site for sore eyes.

Whoops - I didn't realise it was in fact a real site, but seems harmless.

Another step inthe right direction of the ultimate prize of power storage. Did you catch the brief news item a week ago about a company which was using off peak electricity to make liquified air, which was later use to drive generators. No I don't understand how it's done either, but it seems to wor...

I do wish I'd been born without the immediate knee jerk response to tales like this of "I don't believe it". Life would be so much simpler.
I'm not saying it's not true, just giving my immediate reaction.

Maxine Sullivan - Having never ever heard of her, I thought you had made her up at first, but no - thanks to the miracle of Spotify, I am listening to her from 1938 - 1940 as I type. Very mellow, a bit like Cleo Laine?
