Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?

Just read the stuff about Asian men grooming girls etc. Sexual abuse happens within all communities and I think the highest incidence is within families - not in the main incestuous. Men target vulnerable women who have children, move in and bingo! For many years I worked as a social worker in Manch...

Visiting my son and his wife in London. They have a box of veg delivered every week and had a glut of leeks and potatoes so made soup and some soda bread, which is so easy that even I can manage it without it turning out like a stone.

Was interested to read Pan Biker's Liverpool tale. I travelled there on Tuesday aboard the steam tug "Kerne" which celebrated her centenary this year and was on her way to an event to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the North Atlantic. We sailed from Acton Bridge via the ...

Reading Engels which was being promoted at Waterstones. Interesting and has not lost it's relevance, but I'll be glad when I've finished it. Very harrowing.

Engels was an anti semite.

Chatting to an Austwick farmer who was feeding his sheep a magnesium supplemented feed, he said "I want them feet down not feet up".

Haven't come across the term, but stones are a euphemism for testicles. Sounds very painful....a scythe!

Re: ANDREW STUTTARD

Thank you for the responses. Brilliant stuff in the Calderdale archive Wendy. I am particularly interested in the hand loom weaving of delaine. My ggg grandfather Richard Pickles was such a weaver as late as 1851 by which time he had moved to from Barlick to Roughlee; in the census HLW delaine is li...

Re: Barrowford - Stephen Pickles, street musician

I thought that this may be of interest given the references to "Maria Marten & the Red Barn". There is a loose connection between the play and Barlick. Prior to becoming the wife of Barlick man James Pickles, my ggrandmother was a Mrs Longmore, an actress. I recently visited the Wolver...

Should have explained that this relates to a family who moved from Barnoldswick to Blacko Foot Farm. I don't know which mode of transport they would have used. Never mind....it is a bit of a long shot.

Does anyone have any idea which road you would have travelled from Barnoldswick / Springs to Blacko Foot in 1824? Have looked at the OS Map & tried the internet to no avail.

I've spent the last few days with my nose in Victorian newspapers, researching Henry Pickles, theatre proprietor & son of Barlick. I found a purler of an article from the Burnley Advertiser 18/02/1865. The gist is that Richard III was being played at Henry's wooden theatre in Burnley. In the fin...
