Re: Today I shall be Mainly...

The Mid-Autumn Festival which falls on Sept 21 this year, is a traditional festival symbolizing family reunions. Yesterday, my wife took the express train (not the high speed train) to her home town, Liuzhou, a 4 hours 48 mins journey. The high speed train takes 2 hours 27 mins but costs 123 rmb vs ...

I've almost forgotten, it was 59 years ago since I worked at Swindle and Bowker for 3.75 groats an hour! It's a winding handle that fits in a ledger spline for opening the pages. Was it Kalamazoo who made the ledgers?

Re: Seen in the News

A new military strategic alliance has been formed consisting of UK, the USA, and Australia. It is meant to provide Australia with a nuclear propelled submarine capability, and will be known as AUKUS. Seems the French are a bit miffed for being left out - however it would have been very difficult to...

Graham, it sounds as though you have as many pumps as I have engines! When these fail I'll replace them with 24V ones and feel a lot safer. Is 220V allowed for submersible pumps in domestic ponds in the UK? There are only 2 active pumps, one permanently running the filtration system, and the other ...

It hasn't affected my access to UK financial sites. As far as I know I haven't got the app on my phone. Don't forget it was China a few years ago that put a "back door" in the operating system on every computer that was sold. I've forgotten the details now. Personally I couldn't care less ...

I still pay income tax in UK and not China. So long as I spend a month outside China in every 5 year period then I can avoid paying tax in China. To be honest, this rule isn't enforced. Last time I checked, my tax liabilities would be about the same whether I paid in China or UK.

People are now seeing about 42% of their income disappear in taxes and that will rise when the NI goes up. Those who have been to university and then into a job and have to pay back the loans for the uni course will be seeing 50% disappear. Which is exactly why I decided to go for early retirement ...
