WASTE NOT WANT NOT
Brad posted about his experiences seeing how food was 'processed'. I thought it might be time for a rerun of this 2000 article: WASTE NOT WANT NOT? 8/02/2000 I think I may have been very lucky in my choice of parents, we are a long living family with an extremely varied ancestry. However, when I rea...

Re: Superstore developments
Brad, I had the same experience. During my working life I have seen many plants and learned some shocking things about food processing. I had an article published once in the Food Magazine about these things and it caused quite a stir. Nothing ever came of it..... Perhaps worth posting it again.....

I'd just like to place on record the fact that I think we are lucky to have the BBC. http://oneguyfrombarlick.co.uk/gallery/image.php?album_id=14&image_id=93 Just snapped this in the back street. Are they all going home? Or do they know something we don't! Had a word with the postie (Hubby of BB...

SILVER LININGS I once read that a good therapy for anyone suffering from depression is to draw up a list of the good things in their life. I don't think I have ever been clinically depressed, if I have I haven't noticed it! However the idea a looking for the Silver Lining is a good one. I've been th...

Re: READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?
I got another book down off the shelf containing books I bought to read when I retire. 'The Lives of Enoch Powell' by Patrick Cosgrave. Heavy going because Cosgrave has a very self-consciously 'academic' style. Many of his sentences are so full of sub-clauses and commas that you get lost and have to...

Re: Barlick police
Steve, yes they had cars but not to the same extent as today. Popular models were Ford Anglias and Morris Minors. Traffic police had graduated from the old Wolsleys to Ford Zephyrs and the old chrome plated bell on the front had given way to the first sirens. The police were also very quick to adopt...

Re: DIALECT AND WORD MEANINGS
Had a look at Webster... They say that it comes from Medieval French for 'bent, crooked' and the ultimate root could be Latin 'gamba'. They also mention that in old Norman dialect 'gambier' was bad legs and 'gambie' meant lame.

I agree Tiz. Quite amazing to me how so many people lack the ability to take a detached view based on evidence. This isn't confined to climate change and global warming, we see it in all fields of debate about policy making. It's always refreshing to hear someone focussing on logical assessment and ...

Jules. I remember where I got my information about the good and bad fairies. It's in 'Religion and the Decline of Magic' by Keith Thomas. One of my favourite books. Go and look in there to see how you can attract the house-fairies! It must be deep in the folk memory. When I was staying with Martha i...
