MANUFACTURER'S DEATH -
The death occurred on Friday of Mr. Moses Horsfield, aged 84, of Gisburn Road, Barnoldswick. A native of the town, Mr. Horsfield was well known as a business-man, first as a pork butcher, and later as a cotton manufacturer. He was at Calf Hall and Bankfield sheds, before moving to Wellhouse Mill, where the firm which he established still operates. He was a director of the Calf Hall Shed Company. Always a popular man, Mr. Horsfield had many friends, and the deep respect in which he was held by those who had worked for him was proved by the many people who watched the cortege pass on Monday, including all the operatives of the mill. Mr. Horsfield is survived by a son. Funeral services at the house and at the graveside at Gill, were conducted by the Rev. J.L. Tompkins.

"Funeral services at the house and at the graveside at Gill"

That's unusual, no service in church?

They may have been Wesleyans. Some of my other relatives who were Methodists seem to have had 'friendly' vicars at their local churches (e.g. Linton in Craven) but perhaps the vicar at St.Mary le Ghyll was a little less 'accommodating', or perhaps it was simply that a church funeral service would go against the family's own beliefs?
