I haven't done any Widdup research for ages but have just spent an evening dabbling on Ancestry. John Roberts Widdup had a brother called Smith Widdup. He was married to Maria Lake. They died in the 1930s and are buried in Barlick churchyard.
They apparently had no children, but Maria had a son Arthur born circa 1895. It's a long shot but does anybody know of anyone called Lake that lives in Barlick , that may be a descendant. According to electoral rolls there is another Lake family member and someone called Nellie who lived with Smith and Maria into the 1920s on Park Road. I think this must have been Maria's parents

I just wondered if such a descendant may just have a photo of Smith. The elusive Widdups seem to have been very photo shy, as I only gave one photo of one brother .

I've been having a look at them on Ancestry this morning Sue. Have you managed to decipher Maria Widdup's occupation on the 1911 census return? Some sort of nurse...interestingly transcribed as "artificial house"!

I'd say it was "certified nurse" ?

I use findmypast. I've notified them to do a correction. This is usually done fairly quickly. Not sure if it will be corrected in all search engines?

Arthur Lake is looking like a bit of a mystery Sue, have you discovered a birth record for him or a marriage?
There is a probate record for Maria on Ancestry and it looks as if Nellie was Maria's Sister in Law.

Neither, nor a death record. He could have emigrated I suppose.Thanks for the probate info.
I did find an Arthur Lake who died in WW1 but after a couple of hours probing I found he was born and lived in London!

There is a marriage registered in Skipton for an Arthur B M Lake in 1918, but it's a false trail.

I wonder if he took Smith Widdup's surname at some point and Arthur Widdup is who we should be searching for?? Does that make sense?
There is someone on ancestry has Arthur Lake born abt 1895 Yorkshire, son of Maria Lake. It is in the Howard/Spracklin family tree. They have nothing on him after the 1901 census, but I can try to put you in touch if you want.

Birth of a William Hartley Lake registered in Skipton June qtr 1895. Looks as if this could be "Arthur". Maria did have a brother called William H Lake, so perhaps he became Arthur to distinguish the two. The aforementioned Nellie was the wife (widow?) of William Hartley Lake.
Marriage of William H Lake to Nellie Thompson registered Skipton March qtr 1922.

I have contacted some one. On the electoral roll of 1920, a William Hartley lake was living with smith and Maria. Proper name perhaps for the electoral roll

It's like reading a Sherlock Holmes story..... Lovely to see you all working together!

I do like to get my teeth into a bit of research, there isn't much more I can do these days.

1922 Electoral Register 17 Park Rd William Hartley Lake with Maria and Smith Widdup.
From then on till 1929 they are the same three together at either 17 Park Rd or 17 Crossways, which I think is one in the same address.
Then in 1930 Nellie Lake is with them.
1931 all four
1932 No sign of Smith, just Maria Widdup and Nellie and William Hartley Lake.
From then until 1938 they are all three together.
1938 William Hartley Lake and Nellie are at 7 Beech Street
1940 William Hartley Lake on his own at 7 Beech Street

How do you get access to Electoral Registers? Is it via Ancestry or a separate issue?

PS just found out that separate is the most misspelled word in the English language. I just misspelled then corrected it.

I know, it's a very strange branch to the family, nothing follows through.

Hi Sue, I don't have anything on Arthur Lake's stepfather, but will ask my brother in law as it is his and my wife's side of the family, Arthur's Mother Maria Lake was my late mother-in-laws Aunt, My mother-in-law was Sybil Mary Lake, So will find out any thing I can and get back to you later today.
