Fascinating article.......
On the subject of weight carrying.... One of the facts I found in Taylor's 'Dresden' was that on the longest missions, the B17 Flying Fortress could only carry about 3 tons of bombs, far less than the Lancaster. The Lancaster of course eventually carried the ten ton Grand Slam bomb. Something no other aircraft could have carried.
