Browsing the member list I re-found this Group , as Newshound last found this in June , the actual talk is next friday , 23rd November , visitbarnoldswick link tells me these a cost of £2.00 and the organisation's upcoming programme is usefully on their website at http://www.cpgs.org.uk/

I've attended a couple of the geological society lectures at the Rainhall Centre. The presenters are generally top notch. As someone with a general interest in geology, but no depth of knowledge, I've found them very accessible.

The fracking lecture looks like it'll be well attended.

There was a special feature in yesterday's Grauniad which asked lots of pertinent questions about the impact of fracking on geo-politics.

The talk on shale gas was postponed last year. It's now being held on Friday 12th April.

David, if I were up there, I'd be there! Mrs Tiz and I both have an interest in geology, fossils and minerals, it's a great subject that anyone can get into and Britain is the best country in the world for doing field geology. Geology is also a good grounding for understanding climate change. Shale oil and shale gas have been extracted in the UK for centuries but it's only recently that they have come into the news with the modern method of hydraulic fracturing (fracking). Unfortunately fracking has been given a bad name due to excessive claims on the Web of causing earthquakes and polluted water. By the way, for anyone interested in geology I can recommend `Down to Earth', a quarterly magazine published by Chris Darmon of Geosupplies in Sheffield. It's cheap to subscribe and has interesting news and articles. Chris also organises frequent courses in the UK and abroad.

Geology is one subject I have never pursued and I suspect it's too late now but I still find good items interesting. Nearest I got to serious geology was when I tracked down the plans of the coal workings under Ellenroad and the Mwy junction as part of the building of the new Coates factory there. The architects and planners had never thought of looking into it or the flood plains and routes for excess run-off on the site. Fascinating stuff.

There are interesting developments at the York Potash Mine run by Sirius Minerals. They are mining polyhalite and have found better quality material than they'd hoped for.
