James Dixon Roberts born 1838/39 5 Rawson Place, Bradford W.Yorkshire. The son of John Walker Roberts MRCS, practioner & head surgeon at Bradford Infirmary & mother Francis Margaret Dixon- 1851 aged 13 a scholar living at 5 Rawson Place, Bradford-1861 census aged 23 a medical student at Tonbridge Street, Leeds. 1871 lived at 112 Clough House, Barnoldswick Colne and Higher Calf Hill, Barnoldswick, Skipton and 224 Lamb Hill, Barnoldswick. He died 14th April 1908. I believe he was unmarried and had one leg, I would like to find out if this was the case, and why he only had one leg?

Gilly has questions about James Dixon Roberts so I'm starting a topic for her. Lots of references to him in the Calf Hall Shed Company Minute Books on the site and here's my index entries:

ROBERTS INDEX ENTRIES AS OF 21 April 2007

See LTP. 78/AC series of interviews for the life of Ernie Roberts, late tackler of Barnoldswick. See also 78/AG series of tapes done by Newton Pickles as they contain much information about William Roberts and Sons of Phoenix Foundry at Nelson who made many steam engines. They made their last big engine in 1929 for export to India. May have made a smaller one for the Monarch Laundry at Didsbury, Manchester shortly afterwards.

Albert Roberts
Herb posted on OGFB on 02/01/07: He is sure that Albert Roberts, husband of Rosie [Town] was his grandmother’s [Annie Kendall, nee Roberts] brother born Gisburn. Albert was rock-getter at Sagar’s Quarry on Tubber Hill and his byname was ‘Biscuit’. Jack Platt said he was a hard man. Rosie had a daughter, Barbara who later married Rodney Platt.

1717
The estate map for Bracewell records Thomas Roberts as tenant of Near Cross, Corn Cross, Hay Cross and Great Cross fields at Bracewell.

1753 land tax
Thomas Roberts paid land tax of 3/6 in 1753, no address given. 1757/1760 paid 7/-. 1770 paid £1-8-3. 1770 also paid 5/3 for ‘Hay’. Could be Far Hey?

1835
William Roberts recorded as an elector of Bracewell in 1835. Address given as Eastkit.

1851 census
James Roberts of Flass House, 50, farmer of 20 acres. Son William, 22, HLW wool. Thomas, 17, ditto. Mary, 15 ditto. Same entry in a directory of 1857.

1851 census
James Roberts, 49, Farmer of 42 acres at Moorcock Farm/Inn. Cited as an elector of Brogden at same address in 1849 and 1859.

1851 census
Christopher Roberts of 34 Barnoldswick Lane, 53. coal carrier. Wife Phoebe 46. Daughter Jane 16, winder. Grace, 13, creeler. Elizabeth, 11. Mary, 8.

1851 census
Henry Roberts of Newfield Edge Farm 55, farmer of 55 acres. Wife Ann, 46. Betty, 17. John, 15. Jane, 14. Henry, 12. Richard, 11. Robert, 7. Ann, 4. Tempest, 2. Same man reported as an elector of Barlick in the roll of 1848.

1861 census
William Roberts of Thorneyholme, Roughlee, 55, cotton spinner and manufacturer

1871 census
James Dixon Roberts, 32, surgeon, born Bradford, living at Clough House.

1881Census ?

1887
Barrett for 1887 records Miss Sarah Roberts as Dressmaker of Skipton Road. Ditto in Forester’s Buildings in 1986. [See LTP, Emma Clarke transcripts] In 1871 census she is noted as 37, milliner of Herriff Gardens, Butts.

1890s
LTP. 78/AB/05. Billy Brooks talks about Doctor Roberts who had one leg and lived near Calf Hall. Calf Hall Shed Company minutes 15/04/1908 report that Dr J D Roberts, chairman of the company, had died. A report in CH 27/06/1930 of the death of Robert Windle records that Dr Roberts lived at one time on what is now the site of the Independent Methodist church. Windle left school at 13 and went as page boy for Dr Roberts. Dr Roberts was Council member 1946-1961. Chairman 1948-1949. Barrett Directory for 1887/1896 notes him as surgeon living at Clough House. 1902 Dir. Notes him as same but at Calf Hall. Local Board Election of 1890 notes him at Calf Hall.

1920s
LTP. 82/HD/02 page 6. Harold Duxbury talks about Billy Roberts helping him in the garden at Butts Fields. His by-name was Billy Pudding and he was a carter working for the mills. He stabled his horses in the red brick buildings which used to stand in Butts below Commercial Street and was a heavy drinker. The landlady at the Railway Inn persuaded him to stop drinking so much. Harold said he was very strong and would often take a skip off his load and carry it on his back when going up the steep slope to Coates Bridge in order to lessen the load on the horse.

1930s
Arthur Roberts was a member of the Roberts family who were steam engine makers in Nelson at the Phoenix Foundry. [William Roberts and Sons] Newton Pickles described him as ‘aristocratic’ and on LTP. 78/AG/04 talks about him disputing with Johnny Pickles about an inaccurate spur gear cast for the 96foot well at Whitemoor after the smash in the 1940s. 16 of the teeth were out of register.

c.1938
LTP. 78/AH/12 page 15. Fred Inman says his wife used to work for J F and H Roberts at New Shed in Foulridge. According to Worrall Directory they had 673 looms in Foulridge and some in Oxenhope.

1938
Worrall’s Directory 1938 notes J S Roberts as one of the directors of the Kelbrook Bridge Manufacturing Company at Sough Bridge Mill. Same entry in 1939 when the mill was taken over by Rover Car Company as a shadow factory for work on aircraft engines. The Kelbrook Company was a co-operative shed at the time.

Stanley, the 1841 census information in your index isn't correct. There were no Roberts at Howshay Bar, Burned Hill, Lower Burned Hill or Brown Hill! The first names are all correct, but the surnames should be Smith for Howshay Bar, Wallbank then Brunton at Burned Hil, Proctor & Whiteoak at Lower Burned Hill, Blakey & Slater at Brown Hill.
