Hartleys of Barnoldswick

Post by hartleysjam »

Hi everyone,
my name is Emily Hartley and I am currently researching my family tree. As you all probably know finding the correct Hartley in the Barnoldswick-Salterforth area is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. The Hartley's I am referring are those that farmed at Earby Lane House (Roundell Hartley, 42 was mentioned in one of the posts one here). I have managed to trace them back to Armistead Hartley born.1796. You can see him on the 1841 census living at Earby Lane house next door to John Hartley born.1801 who is presumable his brother or cousin. I have recently been told the records keeper who noted births and deaths ect in the area was a drunk so vital records pertaining to the family were never taken down. This makes it impossible for me to find the parents of Armistead via birth and death dates (as they could be any of the god knows how many Hartleys in the area).
Please Help !!
Thank you

Hi Emily and welcome to the site. Do you have confirmation of Armistead's birth in 1796? I have had a quick look at transcripts for parish & non- conformist chapels in the area and found nothing, however on the wonderful Lancashire On line Parish Clerks website I found the following baptism at St Bartholomew's Colne.

Baptism: 8 Apr 1792 St Bartholomew, Colne, Lancs.
Armistead Hartley - Son of James Hartley & Mary
Born: 3 Jan 1792
Abode: Barnsey
Occupation: Weaver
Register: Baptisms 1790 - 1812, Page 26, Entry 94
Source: LDS Film 1471024

Hope it helps!

Long Ing before the demolition of the mill. The two cottages are what remained of Barnsey Farm. Also known as 'bouncer'.

Hi Wendyf, Stanley,
I have seen this information for Armistead and I believe it to be correct, however when i look into James and Mary it lists them as having 3 children all born in the late 1780's and Armistead isn't one of them. I don't know if this is when the gap in the records began or if I am searching for the wrong James and Mary. Also i have never heard of Barnsey, is this the name of the farm with Earby Lane house ?
I am also researching John Hartley born 1801 who live and farmed next door to Armistead. I believe them to be relatives, cousins if not brothers, but like with Armistead i can not find any records for him other than those on his marriage.
What are your views on this as i don't know where to go from here.

Where are you getting your info from Emily? I found another four children born to James & Mary and baptised in Colne. One of them was a John, born on the 29th April 1794. The ages given in the 1841 census were rounded up or down and aren't a reliable guide.
Barnsey was the farm in Barnoldswick that is shown in Stanley's photo.
I don't have much time at the moment to help, but dont go away....after Xmas I can get down to having a good look!

132 EARBY LANE HOUSE
HARTLEY, Roundhill Head Married M 52 1829 Farmer Salterforth, Yorkshire
HARTLEY, Martha Wife Married F 56 1825 Salterforth, Yorkshire
Entry from the 1881 census for Salterforth, I think this could be Broadstones Farm which was on the site of the car park next to the old mill.

There is a marriage at St Barts Colne for a James Hartley of Gill Parish (Barnoldswick) and "Mally" Armistead of Colne. Looks like a possibility to me.

Marriage: 29 Jan 1778 St Bartholomew, Colne, Lancs.
James Hartley - (X), of the Parish of Gill
Mally Armistead - (X), of the Chapelry of Colne
Witness: James Hartley; John Truman
Banns Read: 11 Jan 1778, 2nd: 18 Jan 1778, 3rd: 25 Jan 1778
Married by Banns by: John Metcalfe, Asst Curate
Register: Marriages 1768 - 1791, Page 143, Entry 454

You've probably found it already but I've bumped the Hartley Index.

Elise, I just happened to catch sight of Earby Lane House on an old OS map and it looks as if it is the farm on the roadside just out of Earby heading towards Salterforth, now called Moorview Farm.

Hi Wendy, thanks for that. Have looked at the 1881 census again, the enumerator has not given a name for the farm after Salterforth Lane House and before Spen so the unnamed one must/may be Spen Head and he has totally missed Hayfields and Broadstones farms which are/were at each end of the mill in the village.
