Harry Broughton

Post by Wendyf »

This is really a question for Moh. Way back in 2008 there was a Broughton topic on the old website Here on which Moh mentioned that Roger Broughton born 1839 in Earby had been in Wormwood Scrubs for 5 years. There was also mention of his son Harry Broughton being involved in a Colne Building Society swindle. We are doing some research in Colne Library for a descendant of Luther Greenwood which leads us back to this family but though Roger's prison records are available online we can't find anything about Harry's problems. Can you point us in the right direction Moh?

That's a blast from the past all right! Glad the old entries survived, we lost such a lot of work......

Unfortunately I cannot find my records and did not make note on my tree as it is the Birtwistles I am interested in.
Say only a little but say it well.

Never mind Moh, it's not important and it was a long time ago. We found newspaper reports of him getting into trouble for dealing with a German company in 1917 but nothing about a swindle. Thanks for looking.

Is there anything about the building society fraud?

There was a fraud reported widely in the papers in 1903, but that involved a father and son called Brooker-Carey, I can't find a Broughton mentioned.
