The Government has announced that Council Tax Benefit is to be abolished at the end of March 2013. From April 2013, councils like Pendle must put in place their own scheme to provide financial support to those people on low or no incomes to help them pay their Council Tax Bill.
We currently spend around £9 million on Council Tax Benefit and this is currently paid for by central government funding. From April 2013, the amount of money the Council will receive to support residents who are unable to pay their Council Tax will be reduced by about 10%. The Council will, therefore, have to consider the reduction in funding in the development of a Local Council Tax Support Scheme.
