Help yourself to free compost from The Big Heap!
Gardeners from across Pendle are invited to come and help themselves to free compost when The Big Heap comes to Colne’s ASDA store next month.
On Thursday 8 May around 10 tonnes of compost will be available for free from the top end of the supermarket car park, close to the recycling banks.
It’s being delivered on behalf of Lancashire County Council by Global Renewables Ltd from Farington Waste Technology Park in Leyland. They have produced the compost from garden waste collected from homes across Lancashire.
Pendle Council’s Waste & Recycling Co-ordinator Carole Taylor said:
“This is a great way for us to give something back to those Pendle residents who recycle their garden waste.
“The Big Heap events in other parts of Lancashire have proved really popular, so I’d advise anyone who wants to get themselves a free bag of compost to come to ASDA early.
“Please bring with you a bag to put the compost in and be aware that there’s a limit of one bag of compost per person.”
The free compost will be available for collection between 10am and 2pm on Thursday 8 May – or until all the compost has been taken if that’s sooner.

In 2013/14, Pendle householders recycled over 36.41% of their waste, which is more than three times what we recycled in 2002/03. However we must recycle 56% by 2015, so we all need to recycle more for Pendle.

Now that households will have to PAY an extra £1 per week per bin to have their garden waste removed I will lay Lincoln odds that the 56% will never be achieved. The only thing that is seriously being recycled is money.
