We have a dry frost this morning. Glass is falling slightly but still above 29.5". Forecast is cold and dry for at least five days. Looks like a classic winter high.
I had a look at the pressure charts. There is a big low stuck at the tip of Greenland but a high to the SW of the UK seems to be blocking it. All looks fairly stable with light winds.

It never got above freezing in Barlick yesterday despite what the Met Office forecast. Even harder frost this morning and the glass has fallen slightly to 29.4". It's going to be another cold day but perhaps more cloud.

Just back from a frosty walk to the butcher's. Colder than yesterday and I've declared it officially winter, the Crombie has come out of the wardrobe and replaced the 'summer' coat.

When I left Rochdale to go to Todmorden, by the time I got beyond Whitworth the sun was out and it has been beautiful over there all day. I have just got back from lunch at the Shepherds Rest where the views were stunning especially as the sun started to set.

We had a cold dry day yesterday with sun. Today it is trying to snow but only managing sleet and cold rain which is freezing on the wall tops. I have no doubt the tops of the hills will be white. Glass has been dithering about just below 29.5", it's 29.4" this morning. Nasty weather and the pavements could be slippy, i shall be being very careful later!
08:00, just back from our walk and even though there is no frost it's cold and damp, no wind though so that helps. Odd patch of ice on pavements. One thing I noted was that the gritters are busy, do they know something we don't? It wouldn't surprise me if there was a bit of snow but I can't say it feels like it....

We've been having some quite spectacular spring storms the last few days. At times the thunder was so loud that I'm sure it was happening directly overhead at my place. Rain has been very heavy at times, but not lasting very long. On Thursday it got up to 40C, very unpleasant, today is much milder.
I know I'm in my own little world, but it's OK... they know me here. :)

Complete opposite of our weather Cathy. Yesterday the cloud cleared and I think it got colder. This morning we have a hard frost, coldest yet I reckon. My CH boiler is very intelligent and adjusts the radiator temperature to cope with outside temperature and it's running hotter than at any time in the current cold spell. The glass rose slightly yesterday and is nailed on 29.5" this morning. Looks like settled weather at the moment. Crombie was a good idea! By the way, washed my favourite Hogg coat before hanging it up for the winter and was struck again by how well it is lasting and how fresh it looks after a wash. A good coat.

Mizzle this morning and it's freezing on the wall tops. Pavements will be treacherous. Glass fallen to 29.2". Reports that it is snowing on higher ground.
Later, after walking round Barlick... There was a light fall of snow last night, some of it is still lying in the colder corners. Butts Beck is surprisingly high, not sure whether we had more rain last night on the moor or whether it is because of the slightly higher temperature thawing the frost.

No frost this morning, just cold and damp. Glass has fallen to 29" and it looks as though, once more, we are lucky in Barlick. Widespread reports of frost and snow further north. Forecast is colder again and probably more frost.

Gloomy day wasn't it... Light snow during the night and it's freezing hard so pavements will be lousy. Glass has risen to just over 29.2". Looks like December! Masses of gale warnings this morning on Shipping Forecast.

Just back from our walk and it's cold out there! The pavements are, in places, very slippy and there will be old folks losing their footing this morning. I hope they don't break anything.
One thin g about it though, it's crystal clear and the air is like wine. Not so 60 years ago today which was the Great Smog in London. In fact the smog was to be found in every industrial town in England but as usual, if it happens in London it's worse! We forget these days just how bad they were. I can remember coming home from school by tram one day in 1952 and the fog was do bad that nothing else moved on the road. The tram got away with it because it was on rails and the conductor walked in front all the way carrying a cast iron oil flare which because of the orange flickering flame could be seen about 5 yards away. It was in one of these fogs that my mother got lost going to the corner shop 200 yards away, it took her an hour to find her way home.
News that Stanstead and Luton airports are closed due to snow on the runways.

By tram in Manchester in 1952? Doesn't fit with my recollection. I started traveling to town in '53, and never saw a tram.. So I looked it up on wikipedia, and found

"(for example the first major UK city to completely abandon its trams was Manchester by January 1949)"

Manchester did but I can assure you Stockport still had trams when I was at SGS. Mind you, I could be wrong with the date, I started there in 1947. Come to think, you could be right because in 1952 I was going to school on my bike. I shall defer to you. I can remember watching them burning a yard full of old trams in the old tram shed at Didsbury to get rid of the wood so they could scrap them. The more I think about it the more I think you are right. I can't see Stockport carrying on if Manchester stopped them because the line ran from Hazel Grove to Piccadilly. Sorry about that.
Cold bright day yesterday and a hard frost last night. Glass steady on 29.5" and the forecast is a band of snow moving down from Scotland that will reach the SE by this evening.
