Autumn 2012

Post by PanBiker »

Summer topic is now locked from further posts. Like it or not it's the Autumn Equinox. Post here your observations on the "season of mists and mellow fruitfulness".

Sun is shining and hopefully Wendy has got Collin out of bed and they are doing the window on the gable end facing down the valley....

Lunch time, and the new window is in. We did the gable end windows when it was windy & showery Stanley, this is the north facing one. I took a pic at coffee break time.

Wendy, the hens look tranquil with no Jack to worry about. You can see the hinge pin hole in that stone really well.
At the moment the sky is clear as a bell in Barlick and it is dry. Early walk a bit of a goody today I think. Glass dropped to 29.7" and no wind. I wonder if they exaggerate the weather when it is in the south?

Strong winds and the rain arrived in the South as predicted, October weather in September , when trees are still in leaf so damage could be greater than normal.

They weren't tranquil were they.... red mite!
The rain didn't start till about 15:30 but I think we've had a fair bit during the night. Glass has plummeted to 29" and while it isn't raing at the moment things look a bit wet! This must be what they promised us for Sunday. It's the equinoctial gales, right on time!

I'm glad the windows are all in and draughts sealed. Now we wait to find out if Cols new system to stop the rain water from getting in above the windows works. The gable end wall is like a sponge, and when there is wind and rain from the west it quickly finds its way to the window surrounds. Fingers crossed.
It's a north easterly today though.

Exposed gable ends have always been a problem. All stone walls are porous, they have to be in order to let water out of them, they have to breathe. This is why using straight cement sand compo is so bad because it is waterproof, it's the reason why good men but lime in the mix. The old cure was to slate the wall which protected it but was ventilated. I've seen them covered with gas tar but don't know whether that worked.
We had a lousy cold wet day yesterday but no extreme rainfall, steady all day. No big wind either but what there was was coming out of the NE and it was cold. Glass fell all day and is still falling, down below 28.5" as I write. Still raining and we'll see whether we get the wind. Definitely not clement!

Later after our walk. Steady rain, not a lot of wind but cold and miserable. Cloud is so thick it hasn't come properly daylight yet. Outside light in the yard goes on if you go out. Butts Beck is roaring over the weir behind Briggs and Duxbury and will get higher as long as it's raining. No problem as long as the trash screen in Ouzledale is clear but it must be getting close to a flood in Water Street in Earby and perhaps at Lane Ends. I hope the drains cope!
Just talked to Susan who lives in Water Street and she says all looks fine, the beck is up but the improvements they made to the watercourses seem to be working. Good!

Cherbourg - Poole is still open I think Eileen, or do you already have a return pre-booked?

Rain, rain rain here in Pendle this evening. Have not heard of any flooding as yet. Hopefully, tomorrow will get a bit dryer. Let us just hope the forcasters are correct.

Constant steady rain all day. Saw sun trying to break through the overcast at 10:30, it didn't manage it! Glass got to below 28.5" at one point yesterday, 28.7" now so rising slowly. We have had no heavy rain or high wind despite all the dire warnings from the Met Office. It is still raining steadily as I write.

It stopped raining at about 10:00 and the day gradually brightened as the cloud cleared in an easterly wind. Glass this morning is rising at 29.3" and it's dry!

Thanks for the Cherbourg to Poole info. From were we are a nightmare to get to so sticking it out for Roscoff to Plymouth. Weather here is unpredictable yesterday was fine, then horrendous showers then we baked for the rest of the afternoon. Sat out at some friends until around 6.00pm then temperature dropped as quickly has the showers came. Ce le vie Eileen

Not a bad day here. Dry and cool at 04:00 when I got up but cold heavy rain at the moment. Glass steady on 29.8" but we have been lucky I think, we haven't had the wind and very heavy rain some have had. Reasons to be cheerful......

Sue, if the streets were flooded in Todmorden you'd be complaining.....
Reasonable day yesterday with occasional sun. Glass risen to 29.5" and it's dry with a slight breeze. Could be worse!

I'm with you Sue, Venice seems ideal, went for the day once whilst staying in Yugoslavia weather was good then too. Brittany isn't bad at the moment, sat out all afternoon soaking up the sunshine. Dried my washing etc. Today we have blue skies and sunshine but looks like there could be some rain brewing fingers crossed I'm wrong. Eileen

It was fine enough in Barlick for me to make my woodworking mess out in the back yard. I like wood but my God it makes a mess! Scattered showers in the afternoon but I missed them because I was having my sleep. I noticed at dinnertime that a blustery wind had got up but it's abated now. Glass is steady on 29.5" this morning and at the moment we have a slight drizzle.
