It was cold but dry most of the day. At 21:00 last night it was calm, overcast and not quite as cold. The glass is rock steady on 1019mb. The forecast is for a clear day with wall to wall sun. High of 6C and low of -2C with a constant moderate SSW/SSE wind which will give a significant wind chill all day, never feeling warmer than 2C and below freezing much of the time so wrap up warm!
06:00. Back from an uneventful walk under clear skies and in a very light wind. Not too cold and I have seen a lot worse.....
David, the sodium street light on the wall of the house mid-way between Church Street and the Pigeon Club is out.....
The distribution of the temperature gradient over the Isles is interesting this morning. It varies from almost 13C in the north of Scotland to -4C in the extreme South. Unusual.......

Yesterday was a beautiful sunny day but cold. Last night at 21:00 it was calm, overcast and cold but dry. This morning we have a clear sky and frost. The glass is down at 1014mb. The forecast is for a damp, overcast and sometimes foggy day. The theoretical temperature is a high of-1C and a low tonight of -3C but under the influence of a constant moderate SE wind all day we shall be below freezing all day and for much of it we shall have -8C, a very cold day so wrap up warm! Daughter Margaret has just mailed me the forecast for Australia Day in Darch, Perth. The high is 41C and the low tonight is 18C....

06:30. We have got back from a bitter cold walk and it will get worse. Luckily it's a dry frost and so it is still good underfoot but they don't appear to have gritted and if you're driving watch out, it could be cold enough to freeze even treated roads! Nice to be back in the warm.....

Not a lot of sun yesterday and bitterly cold all day, the same at 21:00 last night, a light east wind, partially clear sky and freezing. This morning it's the same, a clear sky, light east wind and a frost. The glass is back again to 1005mb. The forecast is wintry, a clear frosty morning but starting to cloud over at midday and by the time it's dark there is a chance of a wintry shower any time for the rest of the evening. The theoretical high is 3C and the low tonight is 1C. However, the day is dominated by the wind chill from the constant moderate east wind, it could get lower than -8C this morning and will feel sub-zero all day. The interesting bit is what happens last thing tonight when there is heavy rain forecast. I wouldn't be surprised if it started as snow and went to slush later..... Wrap up warm! The outlook is for it to become warmer and wetter.
07:00 Back home after a very cold walk. Good job the wind is only a light breeze at the moment but even so it brought tears to my eyes.... Wrap up warm!!

A good bright day yesterday but very cold all day in the wind. At 21:00 last night things were changing, it was overcast, damp and milder. This morning we had steady light rain at 03:30, it is the same as I write. The glass is down again at 999mb. The forecast is for the rain to persist until nightfall when it will clear up. At the same time the mainly SE light breeze will swing into the west as it dries up. The high is 5C and the low tonight 1C. It will never feel warmer than 3C during the day and after nightfall it will drop below freezing as it clears up. A different day, wet weather gear for our walk!
06:35. Very little to say apart from the fact that it has been a cold wet walk. Only one thing improved it, the wind is light and wasn't driving the rain too badly!

Yesterday was as per the forecast, wet and nasty until evening. At 21:00 it was damp, a light wind and a clearing sky but not raining. This morning it was damp after a recent light shower but not raining and an almost clear sky. The glass is up slightly at a shade under 2005mb. The forecast is for a clearer brighter day with sunny spells and no rain forecast. The high is 4C and the low tonight 2C but the light wind, starting in the SW and gradually swinging to East by this evening will give enough wind chill to prompt a warning of icy roads until mid morning in some areas. It looks better but once again the message is wrap up well on this late January morning!
06:30. There was very light rain as we set out under 75% overcast. This faded away but the forecast was correct about the pavements. They are slippy underfoot now and I have little doubt that they will get worse as the morning wears on. The roads were washed well yesterday and could very well become icy as well. Take care if you are out there!

We had good sun yesterday and it was noticeable it had some heat in it. At 21:00 last night it was calm, 80% overcast and light rain. This morning it is Dry calm and no frost. The glass is steady on 1005mb. The forecast is for a dry day with sunny spells. The high is 5C and the low 3C tonight. The east wind will start light and gradually increase to moderate during the day. Nothing to frighten the horses!
06:45. Not a lot to report, it was a very acceptable walk on a dark, dry mild morning with a very light wind and clearing skies. For the end of January this is good and in case you hadn't noticed we have survived the first three months of winter without any really severe weather. (Mail and Express editors keep quiet about their dire warnings over the last two months!)

Not a bad day yesterday and at 21:00last night it was dry, calm, mild and overcast. This morning it was the same first thing and hasn't changed. The glass is still steady on 1005mb. The forecast is for a mild day with a chance of rain at almost any time. The high is 7C and the low 5C. The wind is a steady moderate S Easterly that lightens and becomes variable late tonight. We have a wind chill in the stronger earlier winds that will make it feel below freezing but as the day wears on this lessens and it will fell warmer. Not a bad day for the last day of January!
06:10. We got out early and it was a good call, on the way back there was light rain on the wind. Otherwise a very acceptable Late January walk, this and better will do.

Yesterday was wetter than the forecast suggested, it rained quite heavily all evening and was still wet at 21:00. This morning we had light rain and it is the same as I write. The glass is down at a shade over 1000mb. The forecast is for a very mild day, rain is expected until perhaps 08:00 and after that it will clear with sunny spells. The wind is constant from the south and will vary from light to moderate. The high is 9C and the low tonight 7C, both very mild for the first day of February. There are warnings in the outlook for strong winds on Friday but it is not yet certain what parts of the UK they will affect.
06:20. A good walk. Calm, very light rain and extremely mild. Not bad at all for the first day of February.....

Not a bad day yesterday and at 21:00 last night we had a moderate S wind, broken cloud, dry and an occasional glimpse of the waning moon. This morning it was dry, mild, a light breeze and broken cloud. The glass is down with a bump to 987mb and there are reports on the Shipping Forecast of force 11 winds round the coast. The forecast is for a dry start but a good chance of rain from 08:00 to 15:00. it will be mild, a high of 10C and a low of 5C. There will be a stiff SE breeze all day. The weather is heading into a change and we could have wind tomorrow.....
06:30. A mild, breezy but mainly dry walk under 100% overcast. I say mainly dry, there was a hint of mizzle in the air.

A mild day yesterday with a good breeze but no serious rain. Last night at 21:00 the cloud was breaking but not enough to give sight of the moon, breezy and dry. This morning it is clear, dry and breezy and still mild. The glass started falling at noon yesterday and this morning has recovered a bit from a low of 980mb to 983mb but still very low. The forecast is for it to be bright with sunny intervals until nightfall when a band of heavy rain will come in and persist for the rest of the day. The wind will be constant, southerly and very strong at times. The high is 8C and the low 2C in a strong wind chill. It looks as though we are lucky, far stronger winds in other parts of the country today. The outlook is for colder weather over the next few days but nothing to excite the Daily Mail.
06:45. Not a bad walk at all down to the butcher's, dry, breezy but not too cold. The sky is clear and when it comes daylight we could see some sun. No complaints except for the fact the school warning lights outside St Joseph's church and Osborne Terrace are still flashing away and the lamp in ? Court is still flashing.

Oi - you trying to do me out of a job Ian?

The street lamp on former Elmers is a bit of a problem... (I think there are two that are out).

The supply is from a feeder pillar on the gable end. This also feeds our xmas trees on that gable and round the corner onto Newtown.

During the festive season, our xmas lights weren't working on that block and we had to get a leccy to them. He diagnosed a short on the street light circuit and isolated it. Unfortunately there must have been a further fault that quite soon caused our lights to go out again.

It may be that there's a fault with the supply. If this is the case, it may be that we're in the hands of Northern Power to restore order...

(And you wouldn't get an answer like that from LCC's online system...)

Ian, I know about that site and have used it in the past to report our local lights but as I have said before, it's good for David's street cred if he is seen to be active in these matters and I always vote for him in the local elections.... Politics doesn't interest me, it's who is actually doing the work and gaining the improvements.
The weather.... A good day on the whole yesterday but as promised the rain came in late in the afternoon and persisted all evening, the wind was never a problem. This morning it's damp, a recent shower but not raining at the moment. 100% overcast and a light breeze. The glass is steady on 983mb, still very low. The forecast is for a much brighter day with some showers but sunny spells as well. The mainly southerly wind will decrease during the day and the high is 5C and the low 1C. The trend is towards colder weather.
06:25. Not a bad walk at all. A lot colder and will be even more so when the wind gets up later. The overcast is breaking up, more and more stars peeping through as we walk round even though there is a shower predicted around 07:00. Any dry walk at this time of the year is welcome!

We had showers and sun yesterday and as the day wore on it got colder. At 21:00 last night there was a very light SE wind and thin broken cloud. The half moon was clearly visible. This morning it was dry and colder first thing, it's still cold and there has been a recent light shower. The glass started rising yesterday afternoon and this morning is on just above 991mb. The forecast is for a dry bright day with perhaps an occasional glimpse of the sun. The high is 5C and the low tonight 0C. There will be a constant very light wind all day, starting in the east but mid morning reversing completely into the west. There will be a wind chill and despite the light wind it will never feel better than 3C. This pattern of colder dry weather looks set for the next few days.
06:35. A very acceptable walk on a cold, calm, dry morning with what seems to be high broken cloud. Definitely colder than yesterday but this and better will do for February. Noticeable that the town is deserted. Only eccentrics are about!

Yesterday was neither one thing or t'other. At 21:00 last night it was clear, a light breeze and very cold with a brilliant half moon. This Morning we have frost and thick fog.

Image

The glass is up with a bang to 1012mb. The forecast is for the day to start clear and sunny but gradually deteriorate until by nightfall we can expect rain. The constant SE breeze starts light but gradually strengthens to moderate as the day wears on. The theoretical high is 5C and the low 2C but under the wind chill it will feel below freezing for most of the day even when it rains later on. It looks like February weather later on!
06:45. No change, still foggy and it is freezing on untreated surfaces as black ice. Very treacherous underfoot so I have minced, rather than walked, round the town this morning. I'm glad to be back indoors and anyone who is driving this morning should take care.....
Later.... The Met Office is now talking about the rain later falling as snow on high ground in the Pennines. This sounds like Wendy!

The forecast was spot on yesterday, it started raining shortly before dusk and rained all night as far as I can see, it was certainly still raining at 21:00 and first thing this morning as well. The glass is back at 1003mb. The forecast is for the rain to bate by 07:00 and for the rest of the day to be dry. The light wind starts in the SW and during the day swings round slowly to the NW by late tonight. The theoretical high is 6C and the low 2C but this will be chilled all day by the light breeze.
06:20. We were lucky, it had stopped raining so Jack got back with a dry back which is good. 100% overcast still and a very light wind but cold with it. My rain gauge in Butts tells me that whilst we had a fair amount of rain during the night it wasn't excessive, just a good strong flow, not a banker. The water catchment this winter must have been good and this bodes well for any dry spells in summer.

It was a good ay yesterday and at 21:00 last night it was dry and a mainly clear sky. This morning it was still dry first thing but 100% overcast, this has deteriorated and at the moment we have light cold rain. The glass has jumped up and is at just below 1020mb. The forecast is for a dull, misty day with the chance of a light shower at almost any time during daylight hours. The wind is very light at the moment but will settle down into a light to moderate easterly all day giving a theoretical high of 4C and a low of -1C tonight but the east wind will give a constant wind chill all day, it will feel like 0C all day dropping to -3C tonight. The outlook is for similar weather but colder until at least Monday. I think it's February!

Overall yesterday turned out to be dry day getting gradually colder. At 21:00 last night it was overcast, colder and a very light breeze. This morning first thing it was the same and I have just looked outside, it's the same and noticeably colder, it feels as though we may have a frost developing. The glass has risen and is almost on 1026mb. The forecast is for a cold and mainly dry day but if we do get a light shower it could fall as snow. The wind is constant, mostly moderate and easterly. The theoretical temperature is a high of 1C and a low of -2C but the wind chill will mean that it feels like -5C all day. No severe weather but a day for wrapping up well if you have to go out! It's a full moon again the day after tomorrow and the popular name for this is Snow Moon......
06:25. Back in after our half hour walk round the town. It's dry and so any frost isn't showing yet but it is definitely freezing! Good job the wind is only light, even as it is it gives you face ache. Wrap up warm!

It was a cold day yesterday with a few flakes of snow falling. Last night at 21:00 there was a light east wind, bitter cold and overcast but dry. This morning we have a light dusting of snow and flakes are falling as I write.

Image

The black dog with demonic eyes is an optional extra. The glass is down slightly at 1022mb. The forecast is for an overcast day with very little chance of precipitation but what does come will be almost certainly snow. The wind is a constant moderate breeze from the NE and the north later. The high is 2C and the low -1C but with the wind chill it will feel like -3 to -5C even if we have sun. It's a cold day and a full moon tonight. Wrap up warm kids!
We were back home before 07:00 after an acceptable wintry walk. The wind was very light so the wind chill was low. The pavements are becoming icy as very light snow falls and freezes. No great amount of snow expected but you can't call it anything better than wintry. Watch out for slippery pavements!

A bitter cold day yesterday in the wind but mainly dry, just the occasional flake of snow falling. At 21:00 last night there was a light breeze under an overcast sky, dry and cold. This morning it is the same but very light snow falling constantly, no weight but it is snow! The glass is rock steady on 1022mb. The forecast is for an overcast day with the chance of precipitation at almost any time, most likely to fall as snow but no great weight. The forecast high is 3C and the low tonight 1C with a constant moderate NE wind all day. The wind chill from this will make it feel like -3 or -4C all day. I don't think there is any weight of snow about but it's going to be a wintry old day! Wrap up warm!
06:35. Not too bad a walk. The wind hasn't risen yet, the sleet/snow is very light and while it is cold, no face ache yet! Things could be worse. No sign of the Snow Moon, not even moon-glow through the clouds.

We didn't get snow yesterday, just occasional cold drizzle. At 21:00 last night it was overcast, breezy and dry. This morning we have more wind, it's overcast but was dry first thing and it's the same now. The glass is up slightly at 1024mb. The forecast is for a very cold day with a good chance of snow any time after 07:00. The wind is a constant stiff N Easterly and the theoretical high of 1C and a low of 1C tonight will be driven down as low as -7C during the day, never above freezing. It looks like a wintry day! Wrap up warm!
06:40. Back in the warm! We've had a dry walk but that NE wind is strong and bitter. I have little doubt that if we do get the promised snow, it could be a good fall. One thing is certain, if you can stay in bed do so! Mind you, Jack and I have roses in our cheeks.....

Wendy had snow yesterday up at Lower Burnt Hill but down here it fell as sleet and cold rain and never stuck. Last night at 21:00 it was breezy and overcast but dry. This morning it's the same but not as cold and breezy. The glass is down slightly at just over 1022mb. The forecast is for a dry but overcast and at times misty day. The main feature is the steady brisk East wind which will reduce the theoretical 4C high and 2C low to well below freezing point with the wind chill. The outlook is for gradually warming weather. Still worth wrapping up!
06:30. Back home after a very acceptable walk for mid February. As long as you are sheltered from the NE wind it is not too cold but as soon as it hits you it's instant face ache! Generally misty and damp with 100% overcast.

The forecast was way out yesterday! It turned out to be a sunny day, much better than the forecast. (I often think that the Met Office has a problem with us as we fall between the Western weather and the Eastern variety which are often divided by the Pennines) Last night at 21:00 it was cool, dry and overcast with a light breeze. It's the same this morning. The glass is down slightly at just below 1019mb. The forecast is for an overcast day but with good sunny spells in the afternoon. There is an outside chance of light showers this evening but otherwise a dry day. Th East wind is constant all day, starting as a moderate breeze but gradually abating as the day wears on. The high is 5C and the low tonight 4C with a significant wind chill until mid morning that will make it feel like below freezing but then warm up. This is good weather for mid-February!
06:45. Back from a bracing dry walk in a bitter East wind but no complaints, it's as dry as a bone and my cheeks are glowing now I am back in the warm. This and better will do.....

It was a bright day yesterday with sun at times but that East wind was bitter cold! At 21:00 last night it was warmer, a light east wind and overcast but dry. This morning it's the same out there. The glass is up very slightly at just under 1021mb. The forecast is for a warmer day, bright with sunny spells until around nightfall and a good chance then of some rain. The high is 8C and the low 5C with a light SW/SE breeze, a big change. It will be a treat to get shut of the east wind, as I mention each year at this time the single biggest factor in holding Spring back is that East wind. If it sets in it lowers soil temperature and delays growth..... Mind you, it's too early to be talking about Spring, We still have plenty of potential for bad weather but so far so good!
06:45. Back home after a very pleasant walk. Much milder than of late, calm, dry and the first sight of the moon and stars for over a week. Even better there are definite signs of dawn in the sky to the East. First time I have seen light at this time this year!

yesterday was verging on Spring-like and the promised rain in the late afternoon didn't happen as far as I noticed. At 21:00 last night it was almost calm, overcast and very light rain. This morning we have well defined small clouds with plenty of clear gaps so the moon is popping in and out of the fast moving clouds. It's dry and fairly mild. I've just popped my head out and it seems to be more overcast now. The glass is rock steady on 1020mb. The forecast is for a bright day with sunny spells until mid afternoon when once again we have rain forecast. The high is 8C and the low 6C with a brisk, constant WSW wind that will give a 3 or 4 degree chill all day. Once again this is good weather for late February and the outlook is for even warmer weather.
06:15. Another very acceptable walk. The brisk WSW wind is cold enough to be bracing without giving you face ache! It's dry but the overcast is almost 100% at the moment, not a single sighting of the moon and darker in the East than yesterday. Even so, this is good weather for the time of year!
07:30. I've just been to the Co-op for a bit of shopping. The cloud is breaking but I have news for the Met Office. That wind is nearer WNW than WSW!
