Not sure what to say, I lost Dennis tonight. He had severe colic and didn't respond to painkillers and muscle relaxant. The vet and I made a quick decision to put him out of pain. Twisted gut possibly.

Oh dear- not sure what to say. It had to end one day, but It's a blow. He had the best life, and was lucky to have you to look after him.

Condolences to you all -including Sparky.

You don't need to say anything Love. Many of us know how you feel. As David says, we know it's inevitable but we press on. It'll be interesting to see how Sparky reacts. Be very kind to yourself Wendy, you're vulnerable for a few days, this is a serious life event. Love, Stanley XXX

Our hearts go out to you Wendy, and Col of course...AND Sparky...we cannot imagine how his life has changed. I expect he will be a bit needy for some time.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. I didn't sleep much after what was an awful experience, mostly worrying about the logistics of removing him from the stable when the knacker man comes. I dare say they are used to tricky situations. I've always said that if one went the other would too but I haven't the heart. I'll speak to HAPPA (the charity Sparky comes from) this morning and get their advice.

Wendy I am so sorry. I read this and thought I had read incorrectly and had to go back to check. You must be devastated.

I wish it hadnt happened as it did Sue. Last night i was relieved when his suffering was over and today I have to face up to a few problems, but I will be fine. It was bound to happen sooner or later. Thank heavens it didn't happen when we were a foot deep in snow!

Yes, I expect Sparky is aware, if he spent the night in the next stall...

I took him in to see and sniff at Dennis. He was calling out in the night, I could hear him through the bedroom wall which adjoins the barn but he stopped eventually. He seems quite calm this morning.

What to do about Sparky? He may suffer depression without his mate. He may suffer abandonment without his regular surroundings and his Wendy “Mum”. Tough decision.

I'm borrowing Minnie from the girl who comes to pamper the ponies and give me a hand. Minnie is a 12.2 black and white mini cob who had a foal earlier this year. She is supposedly laid back and easy going. We will see if they get on ok.
