Quite right, Maz. I got over-stressed once too often and still suffer some after effects.

At that time they didn't have a Berlusconi, they were still remembering the effects of Mussolini. Once on holiday in a small Italian town we stood in the shade of orange trees to watch a procession and band go by. How nice to see folk enjoying themselves! Then we found out they were Fascists promoting their ideas. Fortunately not all of Italy is like that (as I'm sure Bruff would tell us).

In warm weather like this be even more vigilant on the cleanliness front. Bugs love these conditions and it's better to be safe than sorry on basic hygiene.

In clearing out the garage and sorting what to take with us I found two tins of Jeyes fluid, one full and the other nearly empty - so I gave the drains a good treatment and got rid of the empty can. Mrs Tiz is still complaining about the smell!

The man who cleared out the garage had his wife with him. At one point she lifted something heavy and I offered to take it from her but she resisted. The husband laughed and said "Leave her be, she's a farmer's daughter!" As we moved stuff they were already `allocating' some of it: "Bert will want this" etc. In the middle of the afternoon he took a load of old bits of timber in his van and gave them to a relative in the village. Now and then they would discuss how something could be cleaned up and renovated. They seemed to be in their element and weren't afraid of the dust and dirt. And they could gossip for England!

Tell Janet to readjust her olfactory preferences! Jeyes has a lovely smell....
Recycling other people's 'rubbish' is good fun if your head works that way. The poorer you are the more fun it is! I'm using an abandoned gas lighter at the moment, I rescued it from a puddle in the car park and love resurrecting abandoned artefacts. I refuse to subscribe to the 'throw away' society.

Thinking about drains.... not a bad plan to inspect outside drains at this time of year after a dry spell to make sure they still have a water seal in the 'U' bend. If they have dried out, sewer gas can escape. A bucket full of diluted Jeyes or similar is a good cure. At the same time you are making sure they are clear and ready to cope with a heavy thunder shower.

The mention of a gas lighter reminded me that yesterday I was reading a booklet about Cornwall which mentioned how some folk used to distil their own spirits. The author, a Cornish man, said it was best used for filling Zippo lighters.

As you get older and perhaps like me with a condition that is controlled mainly by diet, avoid sudden changes! It may make you less adventurous in your cooking but it's safer in the long run. Looking back over the last few days I have been eating less green veggies and I suspect I paid the price yesterday! I shall rectify that today.

Another tip I may have mentioned before is to put corks under the mattress to avoid leg cramps at night.

If you have a mattress on a sprung base and you suspect that you would benefit from a more firm mattress, before you spend money replacing it consider getting a sheet of 1/2" plywood and putting it between the mattress and the base. Could be just as effective and a lot cheaper!

If you have a bit of a puzzle on your hands, don't rush for the first solution that occurs to you. Mull it over for a while, you often come up with something better! (It works in the shed.....)

If you have a problem the first thing to do is ask whether it is yours and what will happen if you do nothing. Amazing how many 'problems' are solved that way!

Also, if you have a problem then talk to other people about it. There's a vast reservoir of knowledge and experience out there. My father was unable to do that - he was always too proud to ask for advice or assistance and he suffered because of it. An example of getting help is the way that we got our garage cleared. When we put our house on the market the agent sent round a man to put the For Sale sign in our garden. We chatted with him and found he did all sorts of other odd jobs for the local agents and for other people. We asked him about helping clear the garage and he said he'd be happy to help. Our agent said he was very reliable and could be trusted not to dump stuff illegally. So we got him in and he and his wife cleared what I wanted to dispose off in two afternoons. No money changed hands, he just got whatever came from selling some of the stuff; the rest went to charity or, if it was rubbish, to the dump.

I agree Tiz. I have always found that it was worth going out to find someone who had surmounted the problem rather than going through the process of re-inventing the wheel. A classic example was digging the Whitelees Pit in unstable ground at Ellenroad. I went to the experts and they did the job faster and cheaper than the original quotation which was my mistake.

We've had three removals companies visit us and provide quotes, which are in the range £2500 to £3000 and they all calculate we have around 2500 cu ft of goods to shift. One quoted the lower end, the other two quoted the higher end. The low quote includes insurance (more than we need) and the upper two excludes it. We're going to employ the cheaper one, but not simply because of the price. The two expensive ones have contracts that look more like a trade agreement signed between the US and China than a removals contract. It would take all afternoon to read the details of the T&Cs. They intend to cover themselves for every possibility under the sun and make so many demands that it's almost impossible to comply with them. We've used the cheaper one before and they seem to be a down-to-earth outfit who spend their time moving furniture rather than writing impenetrable contracts.

We employed a very reputable company to move us (many years ago)....but I was still sitting in a packed up house by early afternoon when they had been expected at 8am.
I called an unknown firm in the local directory in desperation about 3pm and two hairy biker types turned up.
Never judge by appearance. These guys were amazing. Treated our furniture with respect, and did an amazing job. I collapsed in tears at the end of the move, and they even supplied a cuddle. I am still humbled by the fantastic service they provided...

If you are expecting an important visitor make absolutely sure that the lavatory is spotless! Nothing gives away bad housekeeping faster than skid marks! It's a good idea to run the vacuum round and put a clean shirt on as well..... You can tell tension is mounting as I await the imminent arrival of Yiota and her young man Ashley!

It's a common trait these days to discount the young when it comes to serious matters but this is a mistake I have never been guilty of. I spent three hours yesterday catching up with Yiota and Ashley and was very impressed by how clear their thinking was. They are doing well. When we went outside I realised that they were in a very nice Jaguar car. I commented on it but Ash told me it was their second car as the other was in the body shop for a repair! I didn't ask what that was......

Not sure Cathy but it works, we have just had a week in Scarborough - no corks - and we both had night cramps in our legs. Cork coasters work as well - our daughter uses those.
