There is a lot less traffic now the Easter tourists have gone home. It is still School Holidays though, so some holiday makers linger, along with their city germs. So we still keep clear of the shops this week... :biggrin2:
Flu injections are available from the end of this month. Hubby fulfills criteria for getting the free jab, but I don't. But it's only £7 at the chemist, so I shall get it done. Can't have anything else knocking Maz off her feet this year!

The therapeutic effects of cabbage in stew....
Later.... See THIS NY Times report on the epidemic of African Swine Fever that is sweeping across China, home to the world's biggest pig numbers. Imports of pork into China are rising and this is having an effect on global pork prices. If you ever doubted the existence of global trading, think again.

The BBC have gone and spoilt my trick question by correcting their error!
The caption to the first photo now says: `Charles Palmer talks about his passion for restoring classic cars'. The original that I saw said `Charles Palmer with his 1950 Riley 2.5 litre coupe'. I'm sure you'll agree with me the car in the photo is not a Riley!

Keep Britain tidy...... Wellhouse Street this morning. Not only littering but only half the drink and the meal consumed. What's under the sofa at home?

You may remember me commenting a while ago on a bit of a mystery. I kept seeing this big young lad on Wellhouse Road at about 15:00 carrying a couple of butcher's steels. I ran into him yesterday and after excusing myself I asked him why? Turned out he is German and a butcher in the town (Steve's on Newtown?) The steels are German, made in Solingen and cost £160 so he takes them home with him. Small mystery solved and next time I meet him I'll address him in German....... (There were two, one with very fine longitudinal cutting grooves and the other dead smooth for honing.)

Nathan Brown has what was Steve's on Newtown, he was manager at Beech's Butchers in Barrowford until the opportunity of his own shop came up. He's our butcher and a good lad, very popular. He is a local lad and was at school with our Jack and his cohort.

As first posted Dialect and word meanings. Mrs May's visit to the newly build leisure centre in Briefield.Brierfield Mill the term Leisure Centre as we know them may be a bit of overkill or misnomer .
The mill has been regenerated to include a range of functions including Barnfield
– ENTERPRISE offices and workshop hub – COMPLETE – LALC
– LEISURE state-of-the-art climbing facilities and soft play area with cafe – now on site – Leisure Box
– RESIDENTIAL quarter overlooking the canal with a marina style feel – on site in September
– PUBLIC REALM area with car parking, trendy seating area and boulevard
– HOTEL possibly with Spa
– CONFERENCING facilities and exhibition space
– WINTER GARDEN area with restaurants overlooking the Leeds and Liverpool canal with stunning scenery over the surrounding area

The old mill is a giant of a building and it would have been a shame to see it demolished when there was so much potential in it. I hope its successful and proves to be a local asset and not something to be sold off a knockdown price once it has become established.
The picture gallery is worth a browse over and gives some idea of the size an structure and complexity of the work Barnfield have taken on.

I go off to shed, come back...and find everything has been happening in my absence:
  • Trump state visit: Corbyn boycotts Buckingham Palace banquet
  • 2019 European elections: Lib Dems stand on 'stop Brexit' message
  • Measles outbreak: Trump tells Americans to 'get their shots'
  • New Northern Ireland talks process to begin on May 7

Like you P I wish Brierfield Mill well, Brierfield needs all the help it can get.....
Tiz, I know the feeling.... Jeremy is not alone in boycotting the pomp and ceremony part of the Trump visit. Is May trying to establish a legacy? Lib Dems have done the only sensible thing. I hope they damage the Farage/UKIP vote. Trump swings like a weather vane but seems to have forgotten he met and endorsed Wakefield. NI talks will fail again on the same sectarian differences.
This spate of activity looks to me like a headless chicken.....

Listening to the World Service can be instructive. I knew about the use of the Jewish Sheitel but not about the controversies that surround it. See THIS Article. There is an increasing use of human hair in place of synthetic and the problem is the source. So the 'Kosher Sheitel' is now on sale in Brooklyn!

The conflict between the shed, writing articles for the BET and cooking! Decisions, decisions.
The Discovery parked in Butts with a flat tyre.... such things intrigue me.
Kev's LKF about the gateposts from Banks Hill being recycled to Victory Park. I love new facts and clues! One thing that has been a constant all my life is the need to ask questions and come to an understanding. Long may it continue!
The continued realisation that I am free from hospital appointments and the implications of that. I get the feeling I have been very well served by the NHS and extremely lucky.... I find I am making decisions about the future, like home improvements. Such matters have been in abeyance for six months. Lovely.
In that context, can anyone recommend a sensible decorator?

Get the registration of the Discovery with the flat tyre and we can look to see if it taxed and tested. :geek:

I'll bet Pluggy remembers his holiday in Bude, Cornwall. Here's a view I photographed from The Observatory (April 2019).

Tax and MOT ran out in March 2017. First registered in 2001 and it's petrol engine had done over 118,000 miles in March 2016. Left there to rot I'm afraid!
