Reports on the Barnoldswick Talk Facebook page is that the planning application, for 60 houses at Greenberfield, has been rejected by the planning committee.

Indeed Kev, lots of people there to speak which they did very well, unanimous decision. Just have to hope now that the planning officer can put a good enough case together for if/when it goes to appeal.

Best of luck on appeal..... reports suggest that the developers seem to be favoured..... Then there is the cost of legal representation.....

`Fatberg boosts museum numbers' LINK
I'l stay away from the Museum of London in case the fatberg explodes! It's `sweating' and going mouldy but they want to keep it as a permanent exhibit. They must be mad. Decomposing sewer fat has one of the most disgusting smells you'll ever encounter. Imagine if it spontaneously combusted and sprayed the stuff everywhere - they'd never get rid of the smell. :surprised:

Strange isn't it. people visit a museum to look at a fat berg when the only thing they have to do is look round them. With something like 13% of the people in the UK classed as obese you don't have to look a some putrefying lump of fat when you can see in in the 'flesh' with the owner wobbling and swaying leaning back at 20 degrees to get their centre of gravity over their feet just to move about. Taking an example of a man at 5ft 9 inch he would have to be 60 lbs overweight to be classified as obese. At any moment we have tons of fat on the hoof which if it could be rated at kilo watt hours would render Hinkley Point redundant.

I experienced the same thing when we received a sample from a London hotel fat trap. We were working to produce an enzyme preparation to "digest" the stuff in hotel fat traps, or at least to extend the period between manual emptying of the traps. Unbelievable smelly and rancid, made me wretch. I can still smell it now.

I enjoyed your post P. Very true. If ever I want an incentive to lose weight I look at the bottoms wobbling down the street!
Thanks to PE for alerting me to the fact that when Christopher Chope scuttled the Private Member's Bill on making 'upskirting' an offence, he and a mate of is talked out another PM Bill which would have removed the defence of confidentiality from the details of contracts in the construction industry, including sub-contractors. What a sensible idea!

Stanley, I thought you would like to see these photos from the Ardnamurchan lighthouse facebook page this morning.

Lovely Wendy. The station was locked up of course when I visited but I could see the interior of the compressor and generator house that served the fog horn and power requirements.

Image

The foghorn that the compressors supplied. There was a bank of air reservoirs outside the buildings but I can't find my pic of that....

Look at those lovely billowing rocks cut by quartz veins! There's a great image on this Geological Society web page of an ancient volcano at Ardnamuchan: LINK

I think it was given the name Eucrite Ring because one of the two main igneous rock types there is a variety of gabbro called eucrite. Unfortunately eucrite is also used as the name for a type of stony meteorite so it can give the impression, wrongly, that the crater was caused by a meteorite!

Later..... Have a look at THIS BBC report on the takeover of Tata Steel by the EU giant ThyssenKrupp. What effect will Brexit have on the future of this plant? Not good news......

Despite the general enthusiasm about the Tata Steel merger I have my doubts......
The big news is the fact that we are actually having a summer! This is producing its own complications of course, water shortages and moor fires. The big problem with the moor fires is not the initial fire but the fact that the underlying peat is bone dry because of the lack of rain for many weeks. The surface fire ignites the peat and the fires spread slowly underground and can be active for weeks if there is no significant rain. Not much is being said about this yet but I fear it will be a continuing story until we have really significant and prolonged rain.

Tesco talking about getting together with the giant French supermarket company Carrefour, when the former have only just taken over Booker. Tesco says it will allow them to offer lower prices by joint sourcing of food supplies. That means screwing down the suppliers even further and broadens the risk when there's any food contamination.

`Sarah is a yachtswoman who lives aboard her boat and is about to set out on a global voyage for science. She and husband, Conor, have a vision to co-ordinate other like-minded sailors into a kind of research fleet to address some of the biggest issues facing our seas. Their project - and the name of their 12m boat - is called Given Time. The idea is to build a community of vessels that can gather data and conduct simple experiments, all at the behest of scientists.' Given Time
