Hock ham and a fried egg for dinner. The last of the ham and veggies for tea. Nuts and an apple for fillers.

Let's hope it quickly filters through to local GPs and nurses.

Last time I was with Hassan my GP I talked about it and how it had improved my bloods and he agreed with me. I think he at least is a convert.

The heresy of steak pudding and peas for dinner retrieved partially by the meat off half a small BBQ chicken and peas for tea.... I find the peanuts a handy distraction, if I get the munchies two or three well chewed nuts takes the edge off.....

Yesterday was a cook-in. Cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, celery and carrots cooked, laced with butter and grated cheese and left to fester on the hob. At the same time I put the last of the mutton in the slow cooker with onions, the gravy from the ham hock and another bottle of cider. The meat was about six lumps of neck end and neck end chops the cheapest and tastiest part of the sheep!
Dinner was a scotch egg. Tea was straight veggies, the mutton is deboned and broken into bite sized chunks but is still moving slowly towards a complete marriage! Last of the peanuts and an apple for afters. I got the munchies later but took the edge off it with a few spoons of veggies stolen from the pot on the hob.
Now I shall defrost the freezer and order another half sheep!

A cold Scotch Egg for dinner. Straight veggies for tea, the mutton is just coming on song. The slower it's cooked the better! No nuts, just an apple for pudding.

The mutton had come on song and so I had a small bowl for dinner. At teatime I set off to eat the last of the separate pan of veggies but there was it was mostly gravy so, quelle horreur! I fell from grace. I buttered five very small slices of an artisan wholemeal ploughman's loaf I had bought and dipped in the gravy with them. By the time I had done this and drunk the gravy I'd had enough and so ditched the small amount of veggies that were left. Some nuts and an apple. (I know that carbs are verboten but a small treat does very little harm, a little of what you fancy does you good!)

It does indeed, Wendy.
But he knows right from wrong.
( and give him credit, he does take care of himself...and is doing a lot better than most single men in their eighties, who don't tend to do that well statistically)
Feeding oneself decent food is not the only sign of health in people ( especially older people). Stanley cares for his home, keeps it clean, walks every day, engages with people, cares for a pet, and works in his shed. Not to mention he still has "his marbles" and enjoys living.
If I can be like this in my eighties, it is all I wish for!

True! ( he adores you, Wendy)
He doesn't tolerate critiscism so well from me...
But! ( hee hee) we mustn't talk about him as if he is not in the room! That would be rude....

Nonsense Maz, you know I love it and I do actually take notice! Remember I am not as 'sugar critical' as many pre-diabetics and in general stick to the low carb and sugar path. Yesterday I repeated the small buttered slices at dinner time to finish the bread and had only the gravy left over from the remaining veggies. At tea time I wasn't at all hungry and so didn't touch the mutton, I just nibbled on nuts, had one square of 85% chocolate and an apple. Not a conventional meal but low carb, low bulk, high protein and very satisfying.
By the way, my weight is coming down........

Sorry Stanley but I think you said your hba1c result this time was 53. That means you are back into the diabetic range.
Below 42 is considered normal, 42 to 47 pre diabetic and over 47 is in the diabetic range.
There is no such thing as mild diabetes, damage is being done!

Sorry if I mislead you, that was the blood test before that threw up the kidney problem. The last blood test was looking at kidney related readings only and not the hba 1c. I reckon the one before was reflecting my carelessness over carbs which I have largely addressed so let's wait and see what the next one says..... I suspect there will be an improvement......

All the indications are that greater discipline over carbs is working. I am losing weight slowly and that's what I want. As I have often said my fighting weight when I was in my prime was 168lbs. Allowing for loss of muscle as I age I reckon it should be about 160lbs now but it has been as high as 200lbs. I am running on 180lbs at the moment and know that my problem is that I eat too much. That weight is perfectly supportable and I feel well and am mobile and active but I know it would be an improvement if I came down some more. I have got into the habit of measuring the size of my meals by the bowls I eat out of which hold one pint. My scale of cooking matches this two bowls a day. The evidence is that this, combined with my hatred of waste is where the block is so I have cut the 'standard meal' down to two thirds of a bowl and I shall stick to that.
Yesterday I had the mutton and veggies X two for dinner and tea using the smaller helpings and nibbled on peanuts and an apple for afters. The next thing to do is cut back on the nuts!
As Maz said yesterday, considering the mileage I am doing quite well but I feel I could do better.

This is probably one for the experts.

Talking HbA1c, I know that these figures relate to an average blood sugar value over 2-3 months. To change the values would therefore take this 2-3 month interval. It is also said that it is beneficial to get these numbers down to minimise the risk from various nasty conditions. What I would like to know is that once your insulin levels/production has been compromised how much more difficult does it become to get it back down to normal when compared to someone who is basically 'normal' but has transgressed for the first time?
