Missed dinner yesterday because I was visiting, I just had a meat pie and a piece of Ursula's cake. (It would have been bad manners to refuse!) Beef and veggie stew for tea.
One recent improvement in my stews has been that I have found that if I put veggies in the stew raw as it is cooking instead of pre-cooking them first, they don't go soggy. Obvious really but you get into habits.....

Didn't you count that as a meal Stanley?

Not really Liz..... but I allowed it to be a substitute. Yesterday I had my beef and veggie stew twice for dinner and tea. I had augmented it with some more frozen mixed veggies, they work well because they are still crisp even when cooked when first put in.

I had two battered haddock fillets and peas for dinner and the last of the stew for tea. Stuart gave me a pack of fresh pig's liver on Friday, he says there is no sale for it. I shall fry liver, bacon and onions later and this will be the base for some winter eating over the next few days which are forecast to be like today, proper winter!

The liver and onions with bacon, tomato and baked beans was extended with sprouts and made a good and very tasty dinner and tea..... Just for once I got the liver exactly right, I didn't fry it too long! Lovely and tender.

I had lunch at the Cow and Calf on Ilkley Moor. Pork belly and veggies followed by apple pie and ice cream. It was lovely and very reasonable, the bill for 4 of us was £100. I suspect that's cheap today. I didn't feel like any tea, so I just had my 20gm of dark chocolate and some nuts.

I had the stew for dinner and tea. I extended it with a tin of baked beans. It will do me for one more day, cheap nourishing grub!
I've put a mutton shoulder blade in the slow cooker on low in cider with salt, pepper and an Oxo cube. It will be the base for another mutton stew.....

Just a snack for dinner and the last of the liver, bacon and onion stew for tea. I deboned the mutton shoulder and returned the meat to the stew with frozen mixed veggies and sprouts, then another 4 hours slow cooking. It will be coming on song today and looks great.

Image

I thought I'd post a pic of a Vegan nightmare..... Here's the current mutton stew quietly arguing with itself and maturing. This is proper grub! Deliveroo and Just Eat couldn't possibly deliver this..... If it was on the menu in even a low priced restaurant it would have to be £15 a helping at least. It hasn't cost that for the whole cooker full. I rest my case.......

I had the Mutton stew X two for dinner and tea. As I expected, it is even more delicious than it was yesterday.... There is much to be said for cooking in industrial quantities and experiencing the subtle changes that happen over a reasonable amount of time at room temperature.

I extended what was left of the stew with a tin of new potatoes (!!!) that was lurking in my store cupboard, split it in two and had it for dinner with a steak pudding and for tea with a Scotch egg.

Very little for dinner, just a couple of spoons full of Haggis. (Hospital got in the way.) For tea I had the rest of the haggis with the tail end of the mutton and veggies plus some peas.

More fish yesterday. Dill Pickle herring and cold marrowfat peas for dinner. Then I had an expensive tea, two fresh Sea Bass fillets (£6) cooked in foil with nothing but fresh lemon juice and salt accompanied by more peas. Overkill I know but high quality grub! On reflection, it was probably much cheaper than an equivalent ready meal.

Steak pudding and peas for dinner, Scotch Egg and mixed veggies for tea. Usual 20gm of dark chocolate, nuts and an apple for afters.
Later at 06:45. I have fried onions and a nice piece of rump steak which I cut into chunks. Some would say that the rump is expensive and that's true but it all depends how you use it. When the steak was nicely seared and the onions just changing colour I tipped a tin of chopped tomatoes on top and let it simmer while I loaded the slow cooker with a kilo of frozen sprouts and about half a kilo of frozen mixed veggie plus salt, Oxo, a bit of Bisto granules and a few other spices. Then I tipped the panful of onions, steak and tomatoes in and mixed everything up. It will sit on low all day and half of tomorrow and by tomorrow night it will be a lovely beef and veggie stew which will not be much more expensive than £1 a meal.... The very best grub at a reasonable price. You could spend a lot more on two 'ready meals'......
