Same as yesterday, mutton stew twice for dinner and tea. In addition to the nuts I had the last of the ice cream with frozen summer fruits from the Co-op. Good central heating, never mind the weight this weather, protection comes first!

The last steak pudding on its own for dinner. Sausage and peas for tea. During the day I slow cooked a ham hock in cider and at teatime I deboned and defatted the meat. The meat is in the fridge together with the gravy which has set nicely. I shall review my options for today.

I cooked veggies and made buttery mash with nutmeg and tarragon. I had that X two for dinner and tea with a bit of chopped hock ham. (Hock ham is so sweet!)

I chopped the last of the Hock Ham up and put it, together with the cider gravy and the mashed veggies into the slow cooker. The result was a thick, very tasty and nourishing veggie soup. It tastes lovely!

Gravy Day... never heard of it,mind you we did have a luncheon the other day where they served roast meats and salads , all fine and normal , but they also had jugs of gravy on the buffet table. Very odd to serve with salads.
I know I'm in my own little world, but it's OK... they know me here. :)

Never heard of gravy day.

Some months ago, for some obscure reason, I bought a frozen whole Duck. They were going out ridiculously cheap ( use by date not until next year). I've offered this (ruddy) Duck to everyone I know. I've also offered to cook it whenever visitors come. Everyone has turned their nose up at my Duck.
So Duck has come out of the freezer today and will be cooked tomorrow come hell or high water! I simply must move this Duck along, as it annoys me every time I see it in the bottom of the freezer. I shall roast it, and if we aren't keen on it in that state, it will become a curry...

It will be fine Maz, cook it slow and moist (Foil wrap until you want to brown it) and on no account lose any of the skin, that's where most of the flavour is. Best cooked with the stuffing inside it.
I had half of the veggies left over with a Steak pudding for dinner and the rest with a scotch egg for tea. I marinaded a nice piece of braising steak all day and it's sat in the fridge in the marinade all night. I shall find a home for it today....

Duck is in the oven.
That poor wee thing looked like a new born baby straight from its bath when I cut the wrapper off!
Having read the wrapper and the cooking instructions, I searched a few suggestions on line. They recommend NOT stuffing it, as it makes uneven cooking of the bird. "Aromatic Herbs" may be placed in the cavity. (Anyway...mine got a half a lemon drizzled in Mirrin up his cavity). I made sure his baby-like skin was dry and rubbed with Salt. Then I shielded his little wings with foil and fashioned a pair of foil bootees for him. He is on a rack, in a pan, as I hope to collect the fat. He will be cooked under foil until the last 20 mins, when I will remove everything except his wing protectors and bootees. I will remove those for the last 10 mins of cooking.
See how we go. ( he has only been in 20 mins and is starting to smell nice)

The Duck was perfectly cooked and looked spectacular. However, at a kitchen bench management meeting with a taste test, we decided Duck would rest in the fridge until tomorrow and will be made into a Curry.

I'm glad the duck was a success Maz. Small birds can be tricky!
I had steak pudding and a few peas for dinner. Tea was the marinaded steak, onions, a few peas and two fried eggs.

Maz, I only ever cooked a duck once. It looked huge compared to the normal size chicken that would have fed about 6 people. When I cooked it there was next to no meat on it. Very disappointing. I hope yours is more of a success than mine.

We didn't like the taste Liz. ( and the bit I ate kept repeating on me all afternoon). I shall make it in to curry tomorrow, but if we still don't like it, it is going in the bin.

I was going to comment earlier, but restrained myself.

Mainly to say - don't expect it to feed more than two persons, and expect a whole heap of inedible leftover bits.

A wise person once old me that the best way of dealing with a duck was to stuff it with two large whole onions then roast it gently for two hours. Take it from the oven - and discard the duck - the onions will be delicious.

Duck has gone in the bin. It's 35C here today and I couldn't tolerate a curry anyway...and I could have gone to all that trouble to find we still didn't like the taste.
I will never buy another Duck!

Yesterday I cooked my Xmas veggies, mashed carrots, parsnips and some sprouts with butter to add to my cauliflower.
Then I missed my dinner because of Airedale and when I got home Carl delivered my wrap-up which changed all my plans as there was a cooked chicken with it. Everything else went in the freezer but the chicken obviously needed eating. So tea was veggies and half the chicken breast. I have no doubt it will loom large in today's Xmas Dinner!
PS the cooked veggies are in the fridge to extend their life, as usual I cooked too many!
