I needed some hole reinforcements for filing my BET stories so I popped into the Town Square yesterday morning. I noticed a sign on the fresh fish van for fish cakes at £1 each and got two for my dinner. I got a Thai spice one and a cod and lemon, very generous size and a real discovery, I had the two for dinner with fried eggs. I shall be getting more of them! I had two Cumberland sausage with fried eggs for tea..... Definitely a low carb day!

There would have been flour/cornflower or cooked potato used in the fish cakes as a binding agent, and if they were crumbed, that's another dab of flour plus the bread crumbs :laugh5: (carbs!)

Yes but at a very low level Maz..... You can't eliminate carbs completely and you know that. Besides, I don't think that total elimination of anything is good for us.

For a Serving Size of 2 fish cakes (100g) the carb content average is around 25g, the low carb option is to use cauliflower instead of potato which would drop the carb content to around 8g :good:

Exactly, Big Kev.
Sorry Stanley - you know there is nothing more annoying than a person with a new mission in life - mine happens to be finding what foods I can confidently eat whilst flushing out hidden cabs in foods, and I trust no one. ( Did you have sauce with your fish cakes? Check the carbs in that too...)

Thanks for the advice. My body seems to be perfectly OK with a reduced level of carbs.... I shall continue listening to it.
I had steak pudding and mixed veggies for dinner and Meat pie and peas for tea.....

I keep to less than 100g of carbs a day, the majority of those are in the porridge I have for breakfast. I could probably eat less than that but my hba1c has been 40 or less so I'll stick with the porridge :good:

Kev, if it ain't bent, don't mend it.
I deboned the ham hock, cut the meat up and put it back in the gravy. Added a bag of frozen button sprouts and cooked cabbage, carrots and Parsnips, topped the ham and cider up with cabbage and mashed the rest of the veggies and popped the pan in the fridge.
Small pork pie and baby plum tomatoes for dinner and the ham and veggies for tea. No need to cook today!

I grilled bog standard sausages for Jack and some better ones for myself. Dinner and tea were both Veggies with added sausage.

Sausages and veggies X two for dinner and tea. I'll admit that at this time of the week I am glad to see the back of the veggies as the cabbages and sprouts have long converted to mush. But it's still good nutritious food!

I made tomato and onion relish. I still marvel at the transformation that occurs when you let onion, tomato and olive oil have an argument in the frying pan! I had the last half bowl of the veggies plus relish and a deep fried cod fillet for dinner and fish chips and peas for tea with the other frozen fillet.
Later...

A pair of old fashioned hot smoked kippers that Susan and Mick brought back for me. Not sure where from, I've forgotten. They are going to be grilled for my dinner.

Spooky time again - I ate a pair of their cousins on Tuesday, from the 'lucky dip' reduced cabinet at Tesco for £1.44 - bargain. Being NBC trained, I took off the heads and tails then microwaved them. Some pepper, a touch of horseradish mixed with Colman's mustard - result - delicious.

I asked Susan and they are from the IOM. Of course I took the heads and tails off and grilled them lightly. Lovely flavour....

Had the IOM kippers and fried eggs for dinner and Cod, peas, tomato and onion and about 6 chunky chips for tea. So it turned out to be a fish day.

Yesterday was a funny day because dinner was late, it had to wait until Laura arrived with the fish and chips. Rest easy, I had a battered fillet of cod and mushy peas, no chips. I just had a small pork pie for tea as I was waiting for Carl to deliver a wrap up which I knew would have all sorts in it. He came and shock horror I had a meat and veggie pastie and a scotch egg. Today is going to be just as varied, I have some goodies in the new top oven as I write. It's the first time I have used the oven function and I had to get the destructions out. I am impressed by how fast the oven got up to temperature and the thermostat switched it off. Far faster than the old one. I'll report on the results tomorrow.

I made a double batch of meatballs this morning. One lot for tonight and the other lot are frozen for an easy meal in the van. I hate driving all day, then having to stand and cook an evening meal. The more meals I can just shove in the oven, the better. Leaves us free to sip a glass of wine until the bell goes ding!
I can't take fresh fruit or veg in the van, as we must throw them in the bin at the border (Fruit Fly Laws).

I can understand that Maz. Not much of a holiday if you have to cook!
It was a funny day yesterday. I had so many goodies to go out because of the wrap up that I ate too much for dinner. Spiced wings and a small cottage pie. I wasn't hungry at teatime so just had a small pork pie....

Iis this the right thread?

I just saw a pseudonym on a blog 'Pan Yan Pickle' - which reminded me that I'd forgot I'd forgotten about this pickle which for ages was a staple of our kitchen. Has it really gone? Seems so. For us it was between it, and Branston, but it seems they no longer make it, and the recipe was lost in a factory fire in Bury some years ago. A likely story!

Why can't things stay the same? . . . .Bring back Hoe's brown sauce, and Rajah pickle.

Never heard of Pan Yan Pickle, Rajah's Pickle or Hoe's Brown Sauce.
( there is a recipe for Pan Yan Pickle on food.com)

I cooked up all the Veg in my fridge into a French Style Chicken Casserole. Half for tonight, and half saved for a night in the van. Our green waste gets collected tomorrow, so I wanted all Veg matter removed from the fridge, so there will be nothing rotting whilst we are away, either in the kitchen or in the outdoor bin. Departure is set for Thursday morning. (As yet, hubby has not packed a thing, as usual. :biggrin2: )
:laugh5: wonder what he will forget this time....

I remember all of them David. Only had Pan Yan occasionally as mother liked making her own version.
I cooked two small Lamb and bacon rolls . Had steak pudding and some of that with peas for dinner and the rest with peas and the last of the tomato and onion for tea. Stewed plums and cream for puddings.
