Whilst driving home last evening I heard on the radio that if we didn't immediately give up meat and dairy, then the earth would warm by more than 1.5 degrees in the next 12 years, and the sea would rise by 30 metres. I would have to get used to soya 'milk', and tofu.

I went straight to Morrisons and bought half a shoulder of lamb, a piece of braising steak, a pound of chipolatas, and four pints of milk. Put me down as 'slightly sceptical'

I believe them but it's too late for me to make any difference. As for cooking, buy a slow cooker..... that cures the problem! Cook in industrial quantities and freeze the rest in ready meals, not rocket science!

You were in the game earlier than I was David.
No problem making a complete meal in less than ten minutes with the right ingredients and when you come in it's sat there welcoming you..... I'm convinced that this 'no time to cook' is an excuse for people who can't be bothered to lift a finger to look after themselves.

That's why we are closing all the sports centres and swimming baths how else can we sustain this number of takeaways if people go spending their money on keeping fit?

Everything in moderation, don't binge on any food or drink, eat a varied diet and eat only enough to stay alive. The biggest problem of all is that we now eat too much; we eat what we want instead of what we need.

David, I am convinced that Tiz is right. Eat what you enjoy in moderation and take exercise is the best advice I have come up with. God knew what he was doing when he put cholesterol in eggs and mother's milk!

That was intended to weed the oldies out David! Don't forget he let us invent pot gobblers! (They let me keep them in as I had a spinal block and not full anaesthesia. That was a weird experience!)

I have taken note of what Wendy's Colin said to me yesterday about carbs and sugars and am redoubling my war on carbs. I admit I have been lax of late. My problem is that even though I was eating the wrong foods in hospital my blood sugar was always OK. (Would you believe rhubarb crumble?)
I was looking at the official advice on combating low sodium levels and it seems that my lifelong belief in drinking lots of water could be one of the factors so I am knocking it back. It also said that drinking 'sports drinks' was recommended.... However it added that the same effect could be obtained by adding a pinch of salt to water..... Guess which option I shall embrace! It also said that dried peas were better than canned or frozen, so I have a pan-full of dried peas on the go as I write. I have a blood test next Wednesday and will be interested to see what the sodium level is......

Making sure you get enough salt is also important if your blood pressure is lower than normal.

I have always drunk more water than other folks and now I see that something in my metabolism has changed as I age. I also try to limit the amount of salt in my cooking. I have re-assessed in view of the evidence and am drinking less and making sure I get slightly more salt. I have a blood test due on the 7th of November and will be interested to see the results! My version is that I have been erring on the low side of salt usage and on the high side for water. We'll see if I am right when Hassan gets the blood results. (We are allowed an opinion in these matters!)
Later after my walk. I have an idea that my morning coffee is too strong. Perhaps the large amount of water I was drinking was flushing the caffeine out. Whatever, I am going to use one scoop of coffee instead of two. Part of the adjustment to the circumstances.... (It could explain why I have been feeling a bit dithery, we shall see....) I shall save money as well!

Mrs Tiz saw a loaf of corn bread in the supermarket the other day and decided to try it. She wasn't impressed, the texture wasn't good and the outside was a bit plasticy. I had a taste and immediately knew it contained spices so I avoided it. She wasn't keen on the spicy taste either - why can't they let us taste the bread itself? This morning she found that the local bakery has its own corn bread. She took the precaution of asking them if it contained spices and they said no so she bought a loaf to try. Got it home and guess what - it had an ingredients list and one of them was mustard. So, again, not for me. What is worse though is that the word mustard was in upper case letters and a note at the end of the list said that meant it was an allergen. If I was allergic to it rather than just intolerant I could have ended up with anaphylactic shock.

Tiz. There is little doubt in my mind that something has changed. Food labelling didn't exist in my younger days but neither did reports of anaphylactic shock. That doesn't mean that it didn't exist, it was perhaps put down to other causes as the medical profession wasn't as well served by research then. What is obvious is that it is now vitally important and much more should be done to make labels clear and also to recognise that adjusting the taste of food with spices and additives to make it more attractive is such a disadvantage to people who have problems like yours. In hospital I was asked over and over again if I have any allergies, all I could say was "not to my knowledge", but is this right? When does sensitivity to something morph into allergy? I know that if I drink very strong tea it makes me 'dithery'. I suspect that I have become more sensitive to caffeine as I have cut my water intake and so I am going to adjust that as I was getting the same dithery effect.
Some dismiss 'allergies' as over sensitivity but you know this a total misapprehension of a serious problem. I sympathise and am so glad that by some stroke of fate I don't have the problem.

I like the conclusion

"Basically, take any advice to dramatically reduce salt intake with a pinch of salt."

I saw somewhere that any attempt to change your body salt level was counterproductive since the body already has a feedback mechanism which works against your efforts.

Thus eat too much and it is excreted, eat too little and it retains what it has.

Is that true? I don't really know but it has the famous 'ring of truth' about it.

I hope so David because that is what I have gone back to! Have reduced water intake though, I get enough fluids from my tea.
Hassan was very supportive about my need to get back to my own cooking and diet. We learn what suits us if we give it thought.
