Re: Social Media
I don't use FB as you know but I commiserate with all of you who are affected. 'New and improved' is so often a badly conceived cunning plan for the source's own ends.....

This sounds like a good move on the part of Facebook but you can bet it will all be back soon under different account names...

Re: Social Media
Social media sites are driven on the back of advertising revenue. Put a big tax on media advertising and the system would collapse. QED.

Re: Social Media
Just for a little balance, I don't see anything political or unpleasant on my Facebook feed and any advertising is targeted. This is the sort of thing I see because I follow the Ardnamurchan Lighthouse page.

`Apple apps collapse as Facebook takes blame' LINK
`A range of apps on iPhones and iPads stopped working on Friday, with Facebook admitting it was to blame. The firm told the BBC that "a code change triggered crashes for some iOS apps" but that the issue was "quickly resolved". Apps such as Spotify, TikTok, Tinder and Waze were unusable for a few hours. Angry users took to social media while DownDetector, which monitors net blackouts, reported widespread outages. A similar issue happened in May, affecting services for part of a day. Of this latest failure, Facebook said in a statement: "Earlier today, a code change triggered crashes for some iOS apps using the Facebook SDK [software developer kit]. We identified the issue quickly and resolved it. We apologise for any inconvenience." The issues occur because app developers are encouraged to integrate the "login with Facebook" feature, in order for the social network to take advantage of the data the apps collect on users. It means that any updates will directly affect them. The two incidents have led some to question whether Facebook has too much power over independent apps...'.

Re: Social Media
This in itself is a scam, a hoax to scare people into sharing to see how far it will travel. Always check for truth before you share anything!
Re: Social Media
As Wendy says, it's a hoax
It made the national media back in March.
https://www.snopes.com/ is usually pretty quick at publicising hoaxes...

Yes, Snopes has always been the place to go to check out scams. I first learnt about it when I was working in the next office to computer security journalists.

Re: Social Media
I'm always surprised when friends who I consider to be sensible and intelligent copy and paste the message that miraculously unblocks Facebook algorithms and allows you to see posts from more friends.... er....
Re: Social Media
It's usually 'recycled' when FB release a new version.
The whole copy and paste thing, with Facebook, is another one. If a post starts with 'don't share, copy and paste to your wall', don't. It can open up all sorts of issues.

Re: Social Media
That's right, a shared post can stop in it's tracks quicker if only shared with friends whereas a copied post is automatically public and accessible off facebook. There is usually a keyword in the post which is either unusual or incorrectly spelt and allows it to be tracked.
Re: Social Media
People should have to take a test and get a licence before being allowed to use Facebook, Twitter etc! (Perhaps take out insurance too.)

Re: Social Media
Or not use them at all.
PE reports that despite advertising bans FB profits are still rising.
Remember when ITV started it was said to be a licence to print money? This time it actually is. That's the whole point about it and 'services' like it.

`Coronavirus: Harmful lies spread easily due to lack of UK law' LINK
`Misleading and harmful online content about Covid-19 has spread "virulently" because the UK still lacks a law to regulate social media, an influential group of MPs has said. The Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee urged the government to publish a draft copy of promised legislation by the autumn. It follows suggestions the Online Harms Bill might not be in force until 2024. The group's chairman said tech firms could not be left to self-regulate. "We still haven't seen correct legislative architecture put in place, and we are still relying on social media companies' consciences," said Julian Knight. "This just is not good enough. Our legislation is not in any way fit for purpose, and we're still waiting. What I've seen so far has just been quite a lot of delay"..'.

Re: Social Media
I saw a report yesterday that Jeff Bezos gained $13billion in one day. Not social media but their founders are on a similar scale. That's what is driving their evasion of effective regulation, they can afford better lawyers and 'consultants'.
