The price of butter

Post by BillHowcroft »

Apparently there is a shortage of cream, which has trebled in price witha knock-on effect on butter and cakes. I have a work colleague whose parents lease a farm off the local gentry. He says pricing and lack of government policy have led many farmers to pull out of dairy and with the lead time on investment in stock and facilties and equipment the situation may never recover.
He says farming land costs about £9k/acre and even if it yields 3-4 tons wheat or about £500 that's only about £100 net after costs ie about 1% yield. He thinks land prices are artificially high because they are shielded against death duties.
