He started teaching at Ermysted's the same day my dad started his first day there - a fact I reminded Mr Evans of on many occasions.

Along with his colleague in the physics department at the time the late Mr Higson, probably the best teacher I ever had, despite my abysmal grade in A Level physics!

Bob Hoskins (71) has died - RIP

Reports coming in about Peaches Geldof. She had heroin in her system and this is thought to be connected with her death. Fame and celebrity aren't guarantees of happiness. (LINK)

I first remember seeing Bob Hoskyns in the BBC's adult literacy series On The Move, a short drama where Bob Hoskyns was, as the title suggests, a removal man who could not read and write. It is a testament to how good he was that many thought he was indeed illterate and used to congratulate him on his progress.

My favourite film and performance of his is The Long Good Friday, a cracking, teak-tough British thriller of 1979 where he played London gangster Harold Shand with big plans for Docklands. Great use of locations and crackling dialogue. Worth quoting one bit, when his US Mafia backers decide to walk away after the day's (Good Friday) mayhem. Bristling with rage at the two American mobsters:

'Us British, we're used to a bit more vitality, imagination, touch o' the Dunkirk spirit. Know what I mean? The days when Yanks can come over 'ere and buy up Nelsons Column, and a Harley street surgeon and a couple of Windmill girls are definitely over! What I'm looking for is someone who can contribute to what England has given to the world: culture, sophistication, genius. A little bit more than an hot dog, know what I mean?

Colin Pillinger dies after brain haemorrhage
British planetary scientist Colin Pillinger, best known for his 2003 attempt to land a spacecraft on Mars, has died aged 70, his family have said. Prof Pillinger was at his home in Cambridge when he suffered a brain haemorrhage and fell into a deep coma. His family said he later died at Addenbrooke's Hospital without regaining consciousness. His death was "devastating and unbelievable", they said in a statement. The space scientist built a probe to search for Martian life, naming it Beagle 2 after Charles Darwin's HMS Beagle. It was the first time an individual researcher had sent their own vessel into space. Prof Pillinger was married to Judith with whom he had two children, Shusanah and Nicolas.

Yes, me too, early reports seem to be playing on the quad bike accident he had back in 1998 which I believe left him with epilepsy when he came out of coma. No doubt there will be a statement in due course. No age anyway.
