See THIS BBC report of the death of Ray Galton at the ege of 88 years. Steptoe and Sons and Hancock's Half hour spring to mind. Was he part of a golden age of radio comedy writing? Over the years his creations gave many people a lot of pressure.

Captain Michael Howard who was in the secret British Army T-Force at the end of WW2 died recently. His story is interesting but I haven't been able to find an online obituary that I could link to - there are ones in the Telegraph and Times but you need to subscribe to read them. But I did find some information about him on this November 2010 web page: LINK

One thing that article doesn't mention is how shortly after the war ended Howard was told to visit a site in Germany and arrange collection of uranium ore and have it brought to the UK so it couldn't get into Russian hands (or anyone else's hands). He arrived to find a large quantity estimated to be about 11 tons. He managed to get it back to Britain but then the security people came down on him and asked `Where is the rest of it?'. They'd had it weighed and found only 5 tons. Howard been told 11 which was only an estimate but he had a hard time convincing them of his story!

In another story he went to collect military equipment but the Russians arrived at the same time. He threw a party and got the Russians drunk then Howard and his men drove off with all the equipment!

Got news this morning that my boyhood friend Bill Rae died yesterday. His grand daughter Rachel sought me out and contacted me via the site. Modern communications can come in handy at times!

A lady who worked with Paddy Ashdown in Bosnia said this morning `He left Bosnia in 2006, but Bosnian never left him'. At least he was honest and forthright and knew more about real life than many of our MPs.

The lovely Dianne Oxbury, of BBC North West died suddenly in Christies on Thursday aged just 51. She was the best weather forecaster I know, accurate and well presented. Being local to North West you may not know her but over here everyone is shocked. A good journalist, meteorologist and lovel person by all accounts

Indeed Sue, the whole of the regional program last night was dedicated to her. It must have been a very aggressive form of the disease, she looked fine in November when she was doing the children in need walk with Pudsey. Very sad, she leaves a hubby and two kids.

It's a shame Jeremy Hardy had to leave us so early in his life. He was very good at challenging fixed views and raising social issues...and he made me laugh as well.

We took newly made friends to see Jeremy Hardy, I guess we should have checked their politics beforehand. Jeremy was funny, as were their faces! Ah well, don't take anything for granted.
