It was chilling to listen to the BBC journalist John Simpson telling how he was terrified when stalked by McGuinness, the `Butcher of Bogside', many decades ago. He thought he would die if McGuinness caught him and it took 40 minutes to get away.

I was not happy yesterday listening to the reporting. A reformed murderer is still a murderer.

Wimbledon Greyhound racing stadium - has closed for the final time. RIP.
Wimbledon
There is now no such stadium left in London.

A significant event - but can't say I'm really too bothered. A visit to the Derby final was on my 'bucket list'. Finally achieved it in 1993, and was totally disappointed. Nightmare journey, and the place was a dump. I had a vegeburger to eat - didn't trust them for a meat one. Can't believe it lasted this long.

They've moved the race to Towcester - that's within striking distance - might update the list.

We lost the Speedway there years ago, what was Bowaters Packaging round the back , now small industrial and arts units look set to go in the demolition for footy stadium and the london dense housing (despite public transport to that bit still relatively poor - mostly bus routes that are a walk away - it used to be a trolleybus terminal in the 1930s heyday of Greyhound and Speedway racing - one bus route is 24hrs a day - which is better than the Lancashire locals ) . The last Stock Car racing was on Sunday, turns out a couple of friends and some folk who I have found out are related to my mums grandfather have been involved since the 70s in the Stock Car scene (Drivers, Crew Support , First Aid and Marshalls) , the South London lads will now have to spend more time at the likes of Arlington , near Arundel in Sussex. My dad was born a stones throw away from the stadium, but his family never stayed in one house that long normally leaving just after the rent was supposed to have been due.

Robert Pirsig, author of 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance' has died aged 88 years. A favourite book of mine. He had a troubled life and many of us never expected him to last this long. See THIS for his obit in the Guardian.

We still refer to telephones as "telling bones" in this house!

Ahh, the gap between generations..... A delivery driver in the butcher's yesterday said that 'it was being so cheerful that kept him going'. He was too young to remember ITMA but the catchphrase lives on evidently. (It was Mrs Mop who said it all those years ago.....)

This is worth a look. ITMA

A lot of familiar names and catch phrases from the dim and distant past. I don't think I ever heard an episode live, but the references have been with us for years. I wonder what we will remember of the modern 'comedians'.

See THIS for a report of the death of the psychopath Ian Brady. Good riddance but we should remember the families who are still suffering the consequences of his deeds.

The passing of a local legend this afternoon during a performance at Bands on the Square. Facebook land is already posting condolences, I'm just hoping that all the family have been informed which is why I'm holding back...

No consolation to his family but he went doing what he loved, on stage and in his home town.

I can understand that Kev. Allan and Jill used to live just round the corner from us when we were both first married. Allan and Jill the year after us, we could always hear him practising in the front room. Ben and James were mates with our kids.
