Old Sparky in PE draws attention to problems at Hinkley point. Surprisingly it's mental illness on the site. The deadline looms there when the date set in the contract for the sister plant in France to be up and running is reached. It is still under construction and massively over budget. I wonder if the 'government' will notice?

Might be worth looking into, I currently pay 3.345p per KWh for gas and a 14.620p a day standing charge. For electric it's 14.550p per KWh with a 15.310p a day standing charge. Once a year £100 'credit' is added to the account for the DD discount. Is this comparable to your tariff?

We pay a fixed rate at well Kev suggested by the supplier based on our usage stats. As you say makes it easy to budget, we are nicely in credit as we approach the heating seasons but by not too much which used to be the case when we were with British Gas. They once had to rebate us nearly £500 that we had overpaid. I would rather have that than the supplier. We pay £90 a month which seems to be just about right over the year to cater for seasonal variations.

On BBC moneybox (I think) it was said that there was a connection between those energy companies with the worst customer service records, and their disappearance from the market.

I'm with Octopus as many will know, and it hasn't been problem free - but they've dealt with them well, and overall I'm a satisfied customer. I think Ian is too, and I'm guessing he'd nationalise the whole thing in an instant.

David, every week in PE I read of examples of poachers turned gamekeepers in important government regulatory posts. A dodgy record doesn't seem to be any bar to preferment!

I recognise the problems but speaking from personal experience my first generation meter is doing all I expect of it and I am content. I doubt if anyone will be rushing in to upgrade me!

The software for the SMETS1 meters is being rolled out and has been a requirement since July. As with everything these things take time

The September energy bill is in, £49.55.
Things are bad politically but some things still work. I expect to hear any day that my winter fuel payment is due, as I am over 80 years I get £300. A useful amount and I am grateful for it. Of course over the years the relative value has fallen due to inflation but it is still a big help.

It's mainly for coking for steel production. Wonder what they do with the gas

The climate protesters are wrong to object to the mine and it is not a 'kick in the teeth'. If they just thought for a minute, as long as the coal is coked and used in the UK it replaces imports that are not mined under UK safety rules and carry the carbon burden of having been imported. In that case it's actually better for the climate. The culprit is actually making the steel.

Ours was £61. It used to be about £80 with EDF.

The estimated energy cost, at the new house, is £25 a month less than the current house, I'm only downsizing by one bedroom. We'll see how that goes.

Actuals Gas and Electricity £69.47. Monthly direct debit £72.44.

So still adding a little to my plus balance. Not for much longer I'd guess. Still can't win the free roulette wheel spin though.

With got £300 energy subsidy to some persons and a £120 disvcount to others it can be overall cheaper to stay with a higher priced company.wonder when the treasury will realise they are subsidising suppliers rather than consumers.

The regulator has got a bit uneasy about the scale of customers' money being stashed by the energy companies and the now frequent collapse of the newer small ones. About 30 have gone into administration so far.
